Please silk screen the lettering >on the shirts or use some other way to do the printing. The black shirt >with the gold or white print is the best looking one. The two types of shirts are created in an identical manner. Here is the process: 1. a silk screen is made of the logo you want to print 2. the image is silk screened onto a piece of transfer paper 3. a fine, powder like glue is sprinkled over the ink on the paper. 4. the image is heated for a few seconds to bond the glue to the ink 5. The image can then be PROFESSIONALLY ironed onto a shirt with a big ironing thingy After trying my hand at silk screening, the advantages of this process became immediately apparent. As I screwed up a piece of paper every now and then, I was constantly thanking my lucky stars that it was only paper and NOT an expensive, "high quality" cotton tee shirt. I have been assured by more than one silk screener that this process results in every bit as durable an image as silk screening directly on the shirt. And they have all told me that silk screening onto dark colored tee's ( ours are black and bright gold ) is very difficult. The ink tends to soak through and even if you get it right the first time, it may take several coats to get it dark enough to look right. Any one of those attempts can fuck up a shirt and you have to start over. The letters are NOT of the cheap iron vinyl variety. They are created with the same ink that all silk screen images are, they are just applied a little differently. But, I want to tell everyone this right now... IF YOU DON"T LIKE THE SHIRTS. SEND THEM BACK, I WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY (minus return postage). In my personal opinion, black letters on a gold tee are going to look pretty cheap no matter how you do it. I was going for an image identical to the bumper stickers and I think I hit it. But that's just me. Badgirl, since you are the first to voice your disapproval, could you do me a favor? Please wash that shirt 20 times and let me know what the image looks like. I really would like some to test it as I only have the word of the silk screeners on this subject. >Pens are outstanding. However, >the rubber-like letters are pretty bad. This is the type of stuff that peels >off when washed, and it just looks cheap. Quick note: with *any* printed t-shirts, no matter what the process used to create them, the designs will last MUCH longer if you take the simple precaution of turning the shirt inside-out before washing it. I realise this is a terribly un-hackish thing to send to the list, as it reeks of domesticity and mundane housework, but I know many people in the scene own and wear lots of decorated shirts -- tour shirts, South Park, dragons, whatever -- and this simple precaution can make the design on a shirt last five to ten times as long. (If you like the faded look, wash it right-side out until it looks about as faded as you want, and then start turning it inside-out to keep it that way.) That saves money, and if you only had to buy ten percent as many neat printed shirts just think of all the nifty toys you could afford. Another note, I'm familiar with the type of letters you mean, and in my own collection (which includes several such shirts) I've found that this process is MORE durable -- and keeps the design looking vivid much longer. I have a twelve-year old shirt with a design created using this process, and it still looks almost new. Another shirt from about the same time period which was made with the pure silkscreening method is significantly faded and almost illegible in places. Most of the other shirts I have which were made with this method are still just as bright and colorful as the day I bought them, but I can't always place exactly when I bought a shirt and I don't know for sure that I have shirts with the two different processes bought around the same time... these two, however, came from a convention in 1986 and I remember buying them at adjacent stands in the merchant's room on the same day. I also don't have any other shirts that old, so these are about the best I can offer. Hey, how many of you people have worn the same size for twelve years? ;) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the fire burneth a wood, and the flame setteth the mountains on fire; So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. - ---------------------------[ Psalms, 83:14-15 ]--------------------------- Caliban Tiresias Darklock | "Hell, you don't Darklock Communications | know me." Caliban, You can wash my shirts because I tend to ruin them. The only sure way you can tell what the Mitnick t-shirts are like is to BUY ONE! A portion of the $15.00 goes to the Mitnick Defense Fund. I do know that the black shirt with the white stands out like a stop sign. The gold on black probably looks good, too. I just took a look at some of my favorite shirts. I think they are silk-screened. And some of my favorites I wash by hand and throw into the dryer for just a few minutes. But the ones with the latex-like printing don't do well in my washer. Could it be the water in Los Angeles? The order came right away, the pens are definitely worth buying at $1.00 each, and for those of you who don't care one way or the other about the printing process, buy a Mitnick t-shirt. I received one with "free kevin" on the back in large print, and a tiny www.KevinMitnick.com on the front pocket. Personally I like the one with the site info across the front of the shirt in 2-in letters, and the "free kevin" across the back. http://members.xoom.com/TelePhreak/merch.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 20:48:48 -0500 From: "Bachrach" Subject: Re: [mitnick] Backstabbing Snitches - -----Original Message----- From: Support Services To: mitnick@2600.com Date: Sunday, November 08, 1998 8:09 PM Subject: Re: [mitnick] Backstabbing Snitches >On Sun, 8 Nov 1998 19:17:22 -0500, Bachrach wrote: > >> That's justin peterson you mean. justinpeterson.com (the right way >> to spell it) has been registered to Petersen Tanner though... weird. > >Typical ignorant comment. Justinpeterson.com appears to be registered to JP, but I'm still suspicious. When I go to it, I get an error, and it would appear that it has been registered and nothing more. Cyberpunk is very biased against Kevin, and the author's never interviewed KM for the book, although they did interview others. (This is actually cause KM wanted money, which they wouldn't give, which created bad blood, so that the book was slanted against Kevin.) Katie Hafner (the book's co-author and Markoff's ex) actually admitted at one point that the book was slightly biased against KM. It was also written before the most recent episode in KM's life which led to his current detention in MDC (is detention the right word? Incarcenrated isn't.. ahh I dunno.) Anyway, I also personally didn't think cyberpunks was as interesting and well written as fugitive game.
