So you find $21.95 an appallingly high figure? Man, they must pay you guys
squat-fifty an hour. I take it you don't have cable or go to the movies,
either. Cable in most cities costs $10 to $30 a month, which averages

I might note that AOL is an excellent place to meet newbies who want to
learn more about the internet. That would cover the first two categories,
if you were so inclined. 

As far as masturbation goes, perhaps you might learn to spell it. On AOL,
that would be keyword: Webster. It's a little more difficult on the rest of
the net.

AOL is, indeed, operated by a coalition of assholes. But AOL has a lot of
innocent people on it. We can't judge them by the badge of "AOL", because
we get *SO* upset when people judge us by the badge of "hacker" -- unless,
of course, we're hypocrites and bigots just like the rest of the world. And
AOL has a really great set of basic services. Can you find more and better
information on the rest of the net? Yes, usually. But most people aren't
researching anything in any depth, and don't really care about much of
anything except e-mail, chat rooms, and reading some information on their
own particular hobbies. AOL does that really well. I would think that does
some amount of work toward keeping the rest of the internet clear for those
of us who ARE researching things in depth, or who are looking for
information of an esoteric or detailed nature. Isn't that nice?

Evidently not. 

This is a lot like the grep, egrep, and fgrep situation everyone on UNIX
hits eventually. First, you use grep. Then you use egrep, because it's
better. Then you use fgrep, because someone told you it's faster. Finally,
you go back to egrep -- because you ran benchmarks. 

Right now, a lot of people are ridiculing AOL because someone told them it
sucks. Eventually, these people will log onto it with an open mind and
figure out for themselves whether it sucks. Most will conclude that it
doesn't suck, they just don't like it. 

The underlying lesson here is that the master craftsman does not shun a
tool because another looks more impressive or has a better reputation. The
master uses the right tool for the job, because it is the job he concerns
himself with -- not the approval of his peers. The *master* is beyond the
need for his colleagues' approval... he knows his own skill, and when
another does not recognise it, the skill remains. It does not go away.

I play a little bit of everything -- synth, drums, guitar, inter alia --
and have a pretty extensive MIDI studio setup. I also write lyrics and have
some background in multitrack mixing and recording, and would be happy to
help out on this as well. I've been putting together a video editing
workstation, too, which could be a useful addition to the effort (although
I don't have a lot of background or practice in video creation and editing).

I think that this would not work for 2 reasons.

1)  Lets help kevin and all, but i dont think they are gonna let some

  If you happen to hear "Off the hook" there was a show where Mr. Goldstein
was traveling and happened to be across the street from the jail. Anyhow, from
his description of how the jail was set up, theres no way he'd hear us.... Not
that it wasn't a good idea....its just not possible. Plus he can only get
visitors that are relatives or his attorney, so were not getting in either....

I counter your difference in opinion by recognition of the high level of
support that I received from my anti-Kapra post.

In this situation, Christmas caroling isn't a show of support, it's an
infliction of one's antiquated religious rituals on those who don't
necessarily want or need to experience it.  And with media coverage or
not, it's still laughable.

It might be an ideal expression if one lived on Candy Cane Lane, but in
real life, the last thing that Mitnick needs is to be "donning his gay
apparel" and "decking his halls with boughs of holly".

But I can certainly see the validity in your appropriation of your zeal if
I recognize your desire to counter me for the sheer joy of countering me.

It still might have been more effective to try something like "Maybe
Christmas caroling isn't the best idea, perhaps we could do something
else." The exchange so far has been: "Hey, let's do something nice for
Kevin during the holidays." -- "You suck, don't you know Kevin is Jewish,
you're forcing your beliefs on him, get a life." 

Never mind that a great number of Jews *do* celebrate Christmas, if only in
a secular sense. (At least one rabbi has *recommended* that Jews do so,
just to remain part of the community as a whole rather than separating
ourselves; he claims this is much of the basis for anti-Semitism. I don't
entirely agree, but I can see his reasoning.) Now, I don't know Kevin
personally, and I know that as a Jew myself *I* find Christmas carolers
offensive... but to say that I feel that way and so too must Kevin is just
plain dumb. Even if we are both Jews or both hackers or both collectors of
animal pornography or whatever parallel anyone feels like drawing.

You know, maybe it's just me, but I think it's rather nice that people want
to go out and do something nice for Kevin during the holidays. All
religious issues aside. If you think it's offensive (and yeah, I agree,
Christmas carols for Kevin would be rather offensive), fine. But rather
than telling the guy he sucks and should go flush his head down a toilet or
something, why not offer alternatives? For example, I think it would be
really nice if his lawyer would go in to see him and say "Hey, a lot of
people out there really want to do something nice for you this holiday
season, what would you suggest?"

I mean, we get lists from our family and friends, right? What's on Kevin's
list? What does *he* think we could do for him?

And you HAVE to admit -- don't you think gathering around and singing
Christmas carols is about the *last* thing a bunch of hackers would ever be
expected to do? That might just screw up a LOT of preconceptions about
hackers.

I'm going to sit back now and wait for the slew of flames from humorless
people who want to scream that Kevin most certainly does NOT collect animal

I agree that it is laughable- but the error of the effort can be pointed
out without ridiculing the person who proposed it. THIS is what I was
calling attention to. Your efforts to make laughing stocks of any who want
to help- instead of suggesting more constructive methods of assistance-
work only to make others less willing to help in the future.
Besides, no one (except you) has indicated that anything but christian
songs would be sung. Who knows what might be sung?
