There's a word for people like you. You might want to go look it up. I'd tell you what it was, but you'd think I was being inflammatory. So, seriously, go look it up. >I respect people's opinions >and enthusiasm if they know what they're talking about, It is fundamentally and primarily the desire to pursue the things we DON'T know with enthusiasm and attempt that is at the core of the hacker spirit. You are preaching complacency and the same pathetic elitism that pervades higher education and academia: the idea that somewhere in all of this, there is a "right" answer. Maybe there isn't one. I respect an original idea a lot more than I respect the same old bullshit from prior thinkers being regurgitated time and again. You can quote technical manuals all you want, but they won't make the next generation computer chip. Someone somewhere has to do something stupid that will never work because it's never been done before. But for some reason, it will work, and he'll be called a genius. Stupid ideas make a difference, rOTTEN. We'd miss them an awful lot if they went away. >if not, I don't respect them. The people or the opinions? See, this is where you've gotten out of control. It is one thing to think that someone's opinion is stupid, but another thing entirely to think that someone who had a bad idea is stupid. The idea that you'd dislike a person for a bad idea is so appalling to me that I can't even fathom it. It's a bad idea, and I don't respect it. I think it's a definite sign that you're the sort of person who should be kept away from sharp objects and explosives. But that doesn't mean you'll NEVER have a good idea, and it certainly doesn't mean I should waste a few pages on how stupid and ignorant you are in the hope that you'll unsubscribe from the list. You're not stupid and ignorant because you came up with a bad idea. I have lots of bad ideas. That's what the creative process is; creating thousands of bad ideas, and then pulling out the good ones. As an artist, you should recognise this. If you don't, then maybe you don't understand the creative process for shit in the first place. Go think about it a while. Take a vacation. Work things out in your head. It's a good head, and it works pretty well, but you're pointing it in the wrong direction. I'd like to see you point it somewhere more productive... although I'm sure you'd rather point it someplace "unusual" to give you a little more street cred. Tip: Up your ass is neither cute nor original. >Since this is such a hot topic (for once) which has sparked much anger I, for one, am not angry at you. If you think I am, then remember this moment the next time you want to make some cold comment to someone on the list. The only possible reason you could have to think I'm angry at you is that you can't see my face. They can't see yours, either. Maybe you should stop and think a little more. The odd thing about this is that I'm trying to say "Hey, rOTTEN, there are people who respect you and care what you say" and you're basically telling all of us that you could give two tin shits about those people and they can all fuck off. I'm sure they'll return the sentiment at some point. And won't you be proud! Now, if you'll pardon me, I'm going to return to the stupid idea of rebuilding a 12-year-old text-based game for multiplayer use. Yes, I know it will never sell and I'm wasting my time. What can I say? It's a bad idea. I know Kevin himself isn't actually "real" to a lot of people who know about the situation... he's just a picture on a web page and a name on a banner. Are we anything more than a list of e-mail addresses to Kevin? Shouldn't we be? Why have I developed a habit of stating single questions as complete paragraphs? It's basic sarcasm. The first statement you quote is so ludicrous a concept that its obvious insincerity *should* -- in the course of normal human psychology -- reverse upon itself and cause a corollary perception that you *ought* to worry because you *are* affecting people. I've never actually explained how that works before, and now that I do it seems to be a really fascinating dynamic. I wonder WHY that works. Why would saying something false cause the human mind to flip around and consider its opposite? Does the corollary apply, that when you say something *true* the mind considers its opposite? Is this how truth and falsehood are distinguished, by comparing statements to their opposites? What about something that is neither true nor false? And how does negation work on complex illogical topics? Like with "God loves you", would the mind translate that into "No god loves you", "God does not love you", "God loves others but not you", or does it get more complex yet? Would the mind consider whether "God hates you"? Or how about "Satan loves you"? What is the test which the mind concocts for this particular question? >Let them learn to think, before they can learn to do anything else. You >of all people, Caliban, I would expect to agree. I agree that people need to learn how to walk before they can fly, but I do *not* agree that we are somehow above teaching people to walk simply because we can fly. I tend to think that when people cannot walk effectively, we might want to land for a short while and invest in the future by helping them to walk better. Flying around shouting down how much they suck because they don't walk right isn't very productive. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the fire burneth a wood, and the flame setteth the mountains on fire; So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. - ---------------------------[ Psalms, 83:14-15 ]--------------------------- Caliban Tiresias Darklock | "Hell, you don't Darklock Communications | know me." Have you all (the people who are posting with flames and irrelevant posts) forgotten what this list was for or do you simply not care any longer? Maybe we all need to re-evlueate why we are on this list, and ask our self if we REALLY still need to be on it. Maybe some of us are no longer interested in Kevins plight, and need to move on. It is nice to have an unmoderated list where people are free to post what they like, but maybe the only way to control (or salvage) this list to get it back on track would be to sadly moderate it (*hint* *hint*). Now I do not mean to start another usless thread, so if you disagree or have any comments I welcome them via PRIVATE e-mail (i.e. not on this list) regards, Bronc Buster On Mon, 30 Nov 1998, Grant Watson sputtered: > This list is full of shit. What an interesting idea. Perhaps a local grass-roots Free Kevin chapter would encourage more action on the part of supporters, as well as garner support from those who notice the emphatic and heart-felt pleas of Free Kevin supporters in their community. Strength in numbers as it were. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 19:26:13 -0600 From: "poiSiN" Subject: Re: [mitnick] Chapters.... While that may (or may not!) be true in the present situation re: Kevin Mitnick, one should remember that the USA was founded by those who 'fought the government head-on'. They eventually kicked out that government, and instituted a new, better one. And, personally, I don't think of the Founding Fathers as "moron's", nor as the Revolutionary War as their "stupidest damn idea". Having the guts to go against (or, these days, even _speak_ against) the current Government, even when they are clearly wrong, is neither 'ridiculous', nor 'funny'. It may, however, be dangerous and ill-advised, depending on the society's and Government's attitude on dissension. Anyway, that's my $0.02. We now return you to your regularly scheduled mail list.... Do you think that white people who commit those hate crimes in the southern United States have guts for killing blacks? > Who was it who said "The tree of Liberty must occasionally be refreshed > with the blood of Patriots"? (or some such, I'm too tired to look it up.) > > >I think you were just trying to be ridiculous, but it wasn't funny. > > Having the guts to go against (or, these days, even _speak_ against) the > current Government, even when they are clearly wrong, is neither > 'ridiculous', nor 'funny'. I think we should state clearly what we want (Kevin's freedom) to as many people in the government, and also to the media, not go hacking the government's computers. The government's computers didn't do anything wrong! Also, we may find ourselves in the cell next to Kevin for doing such an act. (Cue the sarcastic tone) He will then really be let out then. Example: If you got a speeding ticket, and you strongly believe that you were going to speed limit, you don't go and smash the policeman's car windows or dent it (at least I hope not!) No, you go to court and explain your case, and hopefully the judge will dismiss it. You don't solve problems by creating new ones. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 21:51:32 EST From: DINOMITE1@aol.com Subject: Re: [mitnick] Chapters.... the chapters could meet at the same time as 2600 meetings, this would simplify everything as there are 2600 meetings throught the country and that would encourage attendance at both. - - Rold Gold ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 19:12:38 PST From: "AnGeL oF DeAtH" Subject: Re: [mitnick] Bullshit List There is a point here people. I don't think I would go as far as to shut down the list for revisions but I do think some changes are due. Maybe a little servalence on the messages that come on the list. This list is an excelent idea...if we would let it do what it's here for. Yea okay maybe an off topic thread every once and a while wouldn't hurt as long as it has something to do with the gov'nt or cops but keep the messages like "I feel like having a jelly doughnut today" (sarcasm gotta love it) off the list. >I agree.
