Within two weeks of eachother, irQconflict has pulled off two events!
(For images of these two events, please visit the images section at the irQconflict website!)
The first event of the millenium occured on 2000.02.26 @ Scholz Garten. With our largest turnout ever, irQconflict has become not just an event, but a well-known tradition of gamerz in Austin and the surrounding areas. This time we included a 4v4 Half-Life Counter-Strike tournament as well as a 2v2 Quake III tournament. We premiered p1mpslap Production's Quake II movie, Rick Jones II. This is also the first time we had an actual media booth set aside to provide digital projections to accompany the gameplay and music. And oh man, was it some sweet multimedia!
While the gamerz played, three projectors provided music induced visual graphics, as well as some Emergency Broadcast Network footage. We even had some DJ's from Supareal attend spin a soundtrack that coincided with live Japanimation which was projected on the walls! Live footage of the event was also mixed into the graphics, as well as ingame shots. The multimedia booth also provided us with the ability to project Rick Jones II so that all the attendees could watch. This part of irQconflict is still developing, and in the future should be completely and totally awe inspiring!
In the Quake III 1v1 tournament, we had some serious carnage. Some of our old blood came back to take on our new blood. Ironically, the first and second place winners were also the winners of the Quake III 2v2 tournament. After hours of killing, the ranking of the tournament was:
- Katsu
- Thrax
- GodfatherX
- Stasis
- Voltaire
- KapnKickass
As mentioned before, we held a Half-Life: Counter-Strike tournament. This tournament was probably the first of its kind to ever occur in Texas, and possibly the United States. For those of you who have never heard of Counter-Strike before, here is a little clip from the summary at their website:
[Counter-Strike] is team-based featuring one team
playing the role of the terrorist and the other team
playing the role of the counter-terrorist. Each side
has access to different guns and equipment, as well
as different abilities. Maps have have different
goals such as: hostage rescue, assassination, bomb
defusion, Terrorist escape, etc.
The type of gameplay that was used for the event was "hostage rescue". Each team would play for 45 minutes as CT or T and then switch for another 45 minute round. The total amount of round wins would then determine the winner at the end of two rounds. At this event we had roughly 8 teams of Counter-Strike players. The prize they were playing for was an Airsoft replica of an M4A1 - a prize worthy only of those who proved superior in the game. After several hours of the teams strategizing and fighting, one team finally became victorious: Out of this team, [CK3]Choke was selected as the MVP. He proved to be a valuable asset to his teammates by always covering their rear, out flanking the enemy, as well as many other things. The winning team of this tournament consisted of:
- CK-3 Choke
(MVP)
- CK-3 Filo
- CK-3 Manrod
- CK-3 FUBAR
The turnout for this event was great. Our attendance surpassed even our own expectations. Both News 8 Austin and KVUE-24 came out and shot footage of the event. Overall, this was our smoothest event yet!
Within two weeks, Our Second event of the
millenium occurred on 2000.03.12 @ Studio Solutions (on Sixth
Street). This event was actually in conjunction with c0ndu1tfest, and
SXSW
Interactive Festivals. C0ndu1tfest is an annual
Digital Film and Gaming Cinimatics festival
in it's fourth year of production.
irQconflict took place on the
last night of c0ndu1tfest, drawing well over 200 spectators in to
see the pure mayhem of the event. The event started earlier
than ever before, breaking our 18:00-06:00 standard. That night, we were
most likely the best interactive experience of SxSW. Later on in the night
Austin News 8 came out and filmed us fragging the night away.
At this event, we once again did both a Quake III 1v1 tournament, as
well as a Half-Life: Counter-Strike tournament. We also provided more multimedia than any human being could withstand without spontaneously combusting! I would also like to mention that after attending several tournaments and ranking only second or third, Thrax finally pulled through and made it to FIRST! The winners of the two tournaments were as follows:
The ranking for the Quake III 1v1 Ironman Tournament:
- Thrax
- GodfatherX
- Katsu
- Sumnr
- Shezrin
- Vato
The winning team of the Half-Life: Counter-Strike Tournament:
- [CK3] Zilker
(MVP)
- [CK3] Manrod
- [CK3] Filo
- [CK3] Choke
I would like to personally thank Jack, Novus, Swift, Sixx, Anormal, S-f34r, ChopTop, Erick, LineNoise, Dweezel, Sgt. Davis, the staff of Scholz Garten, George from Studio Solutions, and c0ndu1tfest for everything they have done to make these events a success. I would also like to thank all of our devoted attendees who have consistently stayed up with us until the wee hours of the night, as well as everyone else who has helped us continue to provide Austin with the premier Lanparty it expects. I would like to thank our Sponsors for what all that they have provided us - Without them, we are nothing.
So what now? Where is irQconflict heading in the future? Go ahead and visit the
