Access Around Austin
 by AustinWireless.net

AustinWireless.net has this information on comercial 802.11 nodes available to the public:

Name Location Price
Katz's West 6th and Rio Grande Free. I went there today (4/8/2002) and the node was not working. The guy said, "Oh yeah. Sorry, but it's not been working for some time. Don't know what's wrong." Interestingly, the node was named "WayPort_Access". This worries me because WayPort is the name of a company that provides fee-based internet access to hotel rooms at exhorbitant rates.
Flight Path Coffee House 51st & Duval (N. of UT Campus) FREE!. Bring your notebook and network card. Has anyone successfully used linux here? I've tried without success. Please post your iwconfig if you have this working. -- I got it working ... see LinuxFlightPath for iwconfig --UPDATE!!! I was never able to get Flightpath working using RedHat 7.2. I updated just about everything (dhcpcd, kernel-pcmcia_cs, and on and on and on). Finaly today I compiled a new kernel (2.4.18 vanilla) and it worked like a charm. see LinuxFlightPath for my .config. I went there today (4/8/2002) and it was up and down the whole time I was there. It changed state three times in an hour. This is my first time there so I hope it's not always like this.
Texpresso Anderson Lane A 60-minute access card costs $5 for the "surfer tables." No laptop needed.
Mojo's 2700 block Guadalupe Wired Ethernet LAN (indoors and out) - $5/first hour or something, also new "surfer tables."
Schlotzsky's Deli Several around Austin. iMacs with wireless internet access. May allow public machines to connect. Rumor is they used to allow any machine to get an address with dhcp but now they filter by mac address.
Starbucks Several around Austin Wireless service offered by Mobilestar. Not free in any sense of the word. They have monthly plans for both national and local service. I'm on the pay as you go plan which is about $20 for 120 minutes. If used wisely it can go a long way. Great throughput and it works great with linux.
Saradora's Coffeehouse and Emporium SE corner of Mays-Main First in Round Rock....and it's free! http://saradoras.citysearch.com/ I went there on 3/27/2002 and while the base station was up, there was not a connection beyond that. Anyone else get a connection here?
Quack's 43rd Street Bakery 411 E. 43rd Street Free for now
Alamo Drafthouse Movie Theater Burnet location Free
Alamo Drafthouse Movie Theater Downtown location Free

But cooler than this is that they are starting a database of Austin Area 802.11b nodes for public use!
