This office didn't submit any information to the Annual 2004 report.

When you get some time, you should really read the Justice Departments Guide to Computer Forensics. You can find one version here, but just search for it on Google under "Electronic Crime Scene Investigation: A Guide for Law Enforcement". It's located on other websites as well.

Resident Agencies:

Carlsbad- No address given. Phone number is 760-929-0811
El Centro- 321 South Waterman Ave, Ste 200, El Centro, CA 92243, 760-353-4743

The FBI uses several facilities around the country to do computer forensics and training. They're called Regional Computer Forensics Laboratories (RCFLs) and according to their website at http://www.rcfl.gov/ there are 9 active ones and a new one coming online on 18 Jan 2006 in Denver Colorado. There are plans to have 13 of these offices by 2006. Here is a list of the current RCFLs and their websites:

Chicago RCFL
Great Houston RCFL
Heart of America RCFL
Intermountain West RCFL
Miami Valley RCFL
New Jersey RCFL
North Texas RCFL
Northwest RCFL
Rocky Mountain RCFL
San Diego RCFL
Silicon Valley RCFL
Western New York RCFL

I will be adding information for each one as I do each state or city where one is located. San Diego has one in this area. Here is some data about it-

RCFL Mailing Address- 9797 Aero Drive, San Diego, CA 92123
RCFL Physical Address- 9737 Aero Drive, San Diego, CA 92123
RCFL Phone- 858-499-7799

Participating Agencies- California Highway Patrol, DHS/ICE, Escondido Police Dept., FBI, La Mesa Police Dept, Naval CIS, San Diego District Attorney's Office, Sand Diego Police Dept, San Diego Sheriff's Dept, US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of CA, US Border Patrol, DEA, US Navy

From a post by Tom E. Perrine at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on securityfocus.org:

"The Regional Computer Forensic Lab (RCFL) in San Diego (multi-agency, led by FBI) always makes at least two copies of all original digital evidence, one with "dd" and the other with SafeBack. The original is then sealed. Work copies are then made of these two "almost original copies", which are never used, except to make work copies. All copies are serialized and physically tracked as if they were original evidence.

Any copies wanted by the defense are made from the "almost originals", IIRC. I am not aware of any defense getting access to the real originals, e.g. they haven't challenged the accuracy of the original copy process. Note that digital evidence, processed by RCFL, has been used in several local murder trials leading to convictions, including Westerfield.

Mounting an original, or even running fsck on a copy Just Doesn't Happen."

OSIN- From my research, the FBI uses at least three, possibly 4 methods of performing forensic analysis: the Linux dd command, SafeBack, Logicube (which is actually a hardware duplicator), and Ilook.
