Mapping the Afghan IPv4 Address Space

Back to Project Home

This project is part of a series of projects looking at various countries' IPv4 address space. Thus far, Afghanistan has the smallest IPv4 address assigned to any country. That shouldn't be surprising considering the years spent under the Taliban and the war on terror. And yet, a lot of it doesn't seem active except for the IOGlobal Services allocation space. The reader should keep in mind that the ping sweeps I did against these 4 IP ranges may not actually provide accurate results. Machines that ping up may actually be down and vice versa. Also, you might get different results pinging from one country verses another.

Here is a quick view of Afghanistan's IPv4 address range:

Ministry of Communications

The description for this range says that it is a government communications network under the Ministry of Communications. It is for implementing voice/data service throughout Afghanistan and connects 34 provinces with 357 districts. All subnets in this range are assigned to the government entity, GCN-DCN, but ping sweep shows no hosts up on any of those subnets. The Minstry of Communication's own website (www.moc.gov.af/64.8.120.27) is hosted in the US by FNP Corporation of Houston, TX. Their IP registration division (www.nic.af/203.119.12.100) is an Australian assigned IP registered at Christmas Island. In fact, a cursory search for other ministries and Afghan government entities show their websites being hosted in other countries, mostly in the US.
