Air Force One Travels from Andrews AFB to Crawford, TX

(Scenario I)

Sector 001

The images for this scenario are located here.

In this scenario AF-1 will be traveling from Andrews AFB to Crawford, TX. If the mouthy Texas reporter was correct, AF-1 usually lands at Fort Hood, or better known by the name Robert Gray Army Airfield (link to overview shot). I make the following assumptions:

1. The entire route AF-1 will take is probably unpredictable due to the large number of possible routes, but might be more predictable as one comes closer to the point of destination or departure.
2. Nearby VORs/VORTACs will be key navigation tools in guiding AF-1 to its destination.
3. There are no intermediate stops along the way.

Airnav.com says this about the trip: 1127.4 nautical miles, WSW, initial true course is 252 degrees.

Since I will be concentrating on both the departure and destination points, this scenario and subsequent phases 4&5 (see Project2 Homepage) will be structured around Andrews AFB and Fort Hood.

Andrews AFB

According to Airnav.com, these are the closest VORs/VORTACs:

Red Star- Gray VOR/DME (GRK)- 2.2 miles from GRK (31.0328711 -97.8137692): If you look south of the red star on the map, you'll see a town called "Ding Dong." Only in Texas.
2- Lampasas VORTAC (LZZ)- 17.6 miles from GRK (31.1855025 -98.1418628)
3- Temple VOR/DME- 22.4 miles from GRK (31.2093358 -97.4249669)

From the Google imagery it looks like there are helicopters on the northeast end of this airfield. A possible parking place for AF-1?

Nearby Airports:
Waco Regional (longest runway is around 6600 feet. Could it support a 747?)
Austin-Bergstrom International

Military Assistance: Fort Hood has a host of military units which could assist AF-1, including AH-64 attack helicopters. This website gives a good overview of what units are stationed there.

Secret Service offices that could provide assistance- Waco, Austin, Dallas. A septic servicing company confirmed that there are SS agents that reside in and around Bush's Crawford ranch (see the report for Texas).
