Cellular Frequency Mod for IC-SC1PC. by: Phil - The prince of insufficient light. May 2000. warning: This is for educational purposes only. I did not do this in USA, and it might be illegal to perform this mod in your country, in mine, it is not. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SC1PC is a very cool and affordable scanner. Unfortunately until now, there was no mods available on the net to unblock the cell block. The cell frq mod is very easy on the SC1PC. It involves couple of steps, which has to be done very carefully. Here you go: 1. Remove the cover, remove the squelch and volume knobs by pulling them upwards. To remove the upper board which is attached to the middle board, you will need to remove the ribbon cable that comes from the cpu board (bottom board, the one we are interested with) and cut two grounding cables. One of them goes to the upper board, and it was pink in my scanner, the other goes to antenna connectors ground. (yellow) Also there are two metal big screws which hold the boards in place, that are near the antenna connector. Take note of which wires you cut, and then remove the upper and bottom boards. There is another black wire which goes to the cpu board, and you will need to cut it too. Then unscrew all the screws that hold the cpu board in place and then remove the cpu board. 2. The upper side of the cpu board is shielded. Carefully unsolder the shield, and remove it. The cpu has another metal square on top of it, which is soldered on two sides. This metal shield is used as a cooling unit. Unsolder only one side of the metal piece, then you will be able to bend it, and see the cpu. 3. Pin 13 of the cpu is at ground, as well as pin 12. Pin 12 and pin 13 joins together with a track. Carefully scratch the track that goes to pin 13, without touching the track that goes to 12. This part is pretty diffucult, I made mine under a magnifying glass. Once pin 13 is isolated solder a teflon wire wrapping wire to it, and make sure it is attached nicely, (you need very good hands to do this) and then solder back the shields. Some epoxy on the place where you soldered the wire might help to increase stability. Although epoxy is irreversible, once the contact is done nicely, it holds everything in place very nicely. 4. This wire that you attached to pin 13 of the cpu needs to be pulled to +4V. Sony uses 4V instead of 5V in their cpu unit. ------------------------------------------- | | | ----- | | capacitor bank. |cpu | | | -- | | | | -- ----- | | -- <--------------------^ | | | ------------------------------------------- When the board is placed like above, you will see three square capacitors at the bottom left, one side of the capacitors are ground, (measure with the DVM to see which side is GND) the side which looks to CPU is +4V, the other side is GND. Run this wire to any of the capacitors +4V side. I had to turn power on in my unit, and measured points to find a +4V, and I found it the second trial, at the positive terminal of those capacitors. The capacitors are also marked, so this wont be diffucult. 5. Solder back the shield. Assemble the unit, first solder the black wire you cut that runs from the cpu board to upper boards, then put the little screws on that hold the cpu board, then put other two boards on place, solder the two other wires that you cut (pink and the yellow one), and close the cover. 6. You are done. turn the power on, and your sc1pc is whole alot more interesting scanner now. Phil - The prince of insufficient light.
