                 CompuServe Meets the Internet!

You may now access CompuServe directly from the worldwide Internet
network, using the Telnet protocol. There is no additional charge
 for access from the Internet.

Once you join CompuServe, you will also be able to access your
account by dial-up modem. However, Internet access may save
you the cost of a long distance phone call.

 JOINING COMPUSERVE

Use the Telnet command which is available on a computer
connected to the Internet. Set your Telnet parameters to:

     Enable 8-bit binary
     Disable escape character
     Enable CRLF options
     Set terminal type to VT100
     Set line mode

To join CompuServe, just follow these steps:

 1. Type the command "telnet compuserve.com" to get
connected. (Don't type the quotation marks).

 2. At the "HOST NAME" prompt, enter "CIS". (Existing
members can enter "CISAGREE" to skip the introductory
     text).

 3. At the "LOGON,HELP,OFF" prompt, enter "LOGON".

 4. At the "300,2400,9600,14400,OFF" prompt, enter a data rate.
This determines the rate at which you will be billed for
     extended services.

 5. At the "USER ID" prompt, new members should enter the
temporary user ID from your membership kit. (Existing
members should enter your user ID and password).

 6. New members will now be prompted for the temporary
password, agreement number and serial number from your
     membership kit.

 7. You will be asked to choose a Billing Option, either
     "CHARGE CARD" or "BUSINESS ACCOUNT".

You are now a member of CompuServe. In addition to connecting
from the Internet, you may also access your CompuServe account
by dial-up modem. From CompuServe, type GO PHONES to find the
 nearest modem access number.

 DOWNLOADING A FILE

The best way to download a binary file from a CompuServe
forum library is by dial-up modem.

Depending on the software you have available, you may
also be able to download a binary file over the Internet.

Download the file over an 8-bit binary Telnet connection,
using a standard protocol. The available protocols are
 "CompuServe-B", "Xmodem", "Ymodem" and "Kermit".

It is not possible to download a file from CompuServe using
 the Internet "Anonymous FTP" protocol.

You may obtain further assistance in the CompuServe Internet
New Users' Forum (GO CIS:INETFORUM). However, regular
hourly connect-time charges apply while you are in this forum,
which is part of CompuServe's extended services.
