Anyone who wants to access the internet through the compuserve
network using the standard Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking support
PPP connection, Microsoft has released a scripting tool which
makes this completely automatic. The tool is part of the Win95
Service Pack 1 available from Microsoft at: www.microsoft.com.
Info on the Dial-Up Networking Scripting Tool is available at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/service/script.htm. It needs
to be downloaded separately from the Service Pack itself, unless
you have retrieved the full SP already.

After you have followed the instructions for downloading and
installing the tool, copy the following script into a text file
with the suffix SCP, for example: CISPPP.SCP.

Follow these instructions from the info in the file W95DIAL.TXT from
this forum's libraries:

Use the winsock.dll provided by Windows 95
------------------------------------------

1). Make sure that you ONLY have the winsock.dll that came with windows 95 in
your windows directory (this file has a size of approximately 42k).

2). Click on the control panel and then click on Network. Click on the add
button and a new menu will appear. If TCP/IP is not installed select Protocol,
click the add button. This will bring up the "Select Network Protocol" dialog.
Choose "Microsoft" from the Manufacturers list and "TCP/IP" from the Network
Protocols list. Click OK.

3). TCP/IP should now be installed in the "Following networks are installed
window" Make sure TCP/IP is selected and press properties. Click on the "IP
Address" tab and choose "obtain an IP address from a DHCP server". Click on
the Bindings tab and make sure Client for Microsoft Network is ticked. Then
choose the "DNS configuration" tab. Make sure "Enable DNS is chosen". Your
domain name is "Compuserve.com", enter "none" for the host. In the DNS search
order type 149.174.211.5 and 149.174.213.5. Leave all other settings untouched.
Click on OK and OK again to exit Network. You will then be asked to reboot
your computer.

4). You will now need to configure Dial-up Networking to connect to Compuserve.
Check "My Computer" to see if Dial-up Networking is installed. If it isn't you
can install this using the add programs facility on the control panel. Once
you've done this make sure you've set up your modem on the control panel. Then
open the dial-up networking folder and choose "Make New Connection" Give your
connection a name and enter the phone number. Then highlight your new
connection with the mouse and press the right mouse button, select properties.
Choose server type and on the type of dial up server click on the arrow and
choose PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT Internet. The only box that should be
checked on this page should be TCP/IP. In the "Advanced Options" section, you
can allow software compression (the bug seems to be gone) and you MUST check
"log on to network", otherwise you will get an error message when trying to log
on. Click on OK and choose configure to set up your modem. Click on the
connection button and make sure your settings are 8,N,1.

*** DO NOT DO THIS ==> Finally press options and select "bring up terminal
*** DO NOT DO THIS ==> window after dialing".

Then press Ok and Ok again.

===========================================================================

Press the "Start" button, Select "Programs", "Accessories",
"Dial-Up Scripting Tool". Select the connection you are using for
compuserve (the one you set up above). Point to the script
(.SCP) file you created above. Select "Start terminal screen
minimized". Press "APPLY", then "CLOSE".

From the Dial-Up Networking folder, double click on the
connection you just made. Enter your compuserve id and password.
Then press connect. After you are connected, all your normal
winsock applications should work.

To configure WinCIM: in the "Special", "Session Settings" dialog
in WinCim, check the "Use Winsock" box, and configure the Host
Name to "gateway.compuserve.com".

NOTE: It is REALLY important that there is only one winsock.dll
in your system that might get executed. Rename, delete, or move any
that you are not using.

I hope this information is useful.
