How to connect to the CIS internet service using the built in TCP/IP suuport within windows '95.

This updates and replaces win95ppp.txt dated 2 May. Please note that the earlier text was designed for those using the Beta edition send out in April 1995. The process for connecting has much improved since then.

If you use Windows 95 built in internet facilities you will be able to use 32 bit internet programs and also benfit from long file names for web pages.

Please note that you do not need Internet Explorer or Microsoft Plus to make an internet connection. Everything you need is contained within win 95 itself. However, in this text I am going to assume that you are using internet explorer. If you have not got Microsoft Plus, explorer may be downloaded from Http://www.microsoft.com. Note the on-line version is beta version 2, which I recommned you use rather than the version than comes with Plus which only allows access to Usenet news groups if you connect to the Internet via the Microsoft Network. When the Microsoft home page appears choose windows '95 and then free software. Then choose Internet Explorer. You can use Netlauncher to do this. Go PPP on Cis for instructions on how to use Netlauncher with Win 95.

If by chance you re-installed Netlauncher after installing Win '95 before you go any further open a dos box and move the file winsock.dll from your windows directory. Now look for a file called Winsock.00? in the same directory and rename it winsock.dll

If you can't get onto the Web you can get it from the Pcmaguk forum, windows 95 library, on Cis, this also contains the scripting facility described below.

You are now ready to install Internet Explorer, note you may also need your win '95 disk as well.. After it is installed you will need to reboot. You should find an icon called the internet on you desktop. Double click to open the internet setup wizard. Click next and choose "I already have an account ...." Click next and choose "yes" to set up internet mail. This will allow you to sent mail via the Web. Click next and next again when you are ready. You will then be asked for the name of your service providor. Enter "Compuserve" Click next again and add your phone number and country code. Click next once more and enter your user name and password. Click next again and for IP address choose "my service providor usually asssign me one". After clicking next again enter the following DNS server numbers 149.174.211.5 and 149.174.213.5. Click next again. Enter your internet mail address, and mail.compuserve.com for your internet mail server. Click next again and once more to confirm your microsoft mail settings. Then click finish and that's it.

Before you go any further open "My Computer" and open the dial up Network folder. You should find a connection called compuserve. Right -click this and choose "properties", then "configure" to check your modem settings. Under "connection", your connection preferences must be set to 8 None 1.

You now need to set up a script before you can dial. If you have Win 95 CD there is a script facility already available. Open the control panel and choose add/remove programs, select "windows setup" and "have disk". Click on browse, choose your CD drive select the admin folder, then apptools then dscript. Highlight the file rnaplus.inf and select OK. The program will install. If you do not have Win 95 on CD use Netlauncher to go to http://www.microsoft.com. Choose windows 95 and free software next choose CD-Rom extras, then administration tools and then Dial Up Slip and Scripting Support. Download the file extract it and follow carefully the instructions you are given how to install it.

Please note you do not need to write a script, one for Cis is provided and should have been installed in your program file\accessories folder.

Now press the start button on the Win 95 tool bar. Select "accessories" and then "dial up scripting tool". When the box appears make sure "compuserve" is highlighted under connections. Under "Script - File Name" enter Cis.scp. Select apply and then close.

You are now ready to connect to the internet. Open Internet explorer and dial. After several seconds you will get a message saying you are connected to Compuserve and a web page should begin to appear on your screen.

Internet explorer can be used in conjunction with any internet program including the Win 95 version of Netscape. Simply run the program and win 95 will dial and connect.
