     1. USING THIS DOCUMENT
     ______________________________________________________________________

BT Tymnet: Quick Steps for Remote Computing shows you how to use BT
Tymnet, a public network maintained by British Telecom. With a local
phone call and telephone-compatible hardware, you can reach any of the
computing centers in this network, which serves thousands of cities
     and many international locations.

Quick Steps documentation is how-to information designed to help you
use software (and hardware) quickly. Because Quick Steps give only
the information needed to accomplish a task, you may want to look at
references or learning documents for more information. The
Documentation Request form at the back of this document lists
     additional information.

This document is intended for an audience familiar with computing in
the Integrated Computing Network (ICN) at Los Alamos National
Laboratory. If you are not familiar with local documentation, see
Appendix A for a summary of standards and conventions used in this
     document.

This document shows you how to use BT Tymnet to reach

o from a remote site to the Open (unclassified) partition of the
Los Alamos Integrated Computing Network (ICN) including
          distributed processors and

o from Los Alamos to other computing sites on the BT Tymnet
          network.

You cannot use BT Tymnet to reach the Secure (classified) partition in
     the ICN.

     2. SIGNING ON TO THE ICN FROM A REMOTE SITE
     ______________________________________________________________________

You can reach ICN worker machines and distributed processors in the
Open (unclassified) partition via BT Tymnet from a remote site
(national or international) through a direct Micom Data PABX
connection. BT Tymnet dial-up rotaries are located in most areas
     within the United States.

To sign on to the ICN from a remote site through the Micom Data PABX
gateway, use the following steps. Remember, you will be back charged
     for using BT Tymnet.

     1. If you are not validated on the Los Alamos Integrated Computing
Network (ICN), call the Telecommunications Security Office, OS-4,
          (505) 665-1805. for validation.

     2. Get your BT Tymnet identification code and password (for Step 7)
by calling the Communications Group, C-4 at (505) 667-0705.

     3. Get the BT Tymnet phone number for the city where you are. For a
list of phone numbers, see Appendix B. (For example, if you are
          in Albuquerque, use
          242-8344 to transmit at 300 or 1200 bit/s, or use 242-8931 to
transmit at 2400 bit/s.) Contact the Communications Group, C-4
at (505) 667-0705, for areas not listed in Appendix B, or enter
information at the Please login: prompt in Tymnet.

     4. Select the appropriate settings on your terminal and
          communication equipment:

          o transmission speed: 300, 1200, 2400, or 9600 bit/s (determined
by the transmission speed accepted by the BT Tymnet number
            being called and your modem);

o 8 bits, no parity; and

          o full duplex.

     5. Follow directions in your modem's user manual for connecting to
          an outside telephone number.

     3. SIGNING ON TO A REMOTE DOMESTIC RESOURCE FROM LOS ALAMOS
     ______________________________________________________________________

If you are at Los Alamos and want to communicate with another domestic
     site, you have three options:

o The Micom Data PABX option (TIG) provides access to workstation
users on a local area network.

o The telephone avoids the ICN completely and must be used if you
are not validated to use the ICN.

        o Tymnet from the Micom.

The decision about which option to choose should be based largely on
your hardware and phone charges. It is often best to try different
options and compare expenses and ease of use.

            _____________________________________________________

IMPORTANT: To reach any remote computing center,
you must be a validated user at that site, and
you must have a valid username/password for that
site. Contact the remote center to get a valid
              account and password.

            _____________________________________________________

Signing on to a Remote Domestic Site Through the Micom Data
     PABX Gateway

To sign on to a remote site using the Micom Data PABX gateway, follow
these steps. Remember, you will be back charged for using BT Tymnet.

     1. If you are not validated on the Los Alamos computing network,
call the Telecommunications Security Office, OS-4, (505) 665-
          1805, for validation.

     September 1992 - 9 - Sign on to a Remote Site

     2. If you are not validated at the remote site that you want to
reach, call the remote site's computer security office to get
validated and obtain the BT Tymnet user name and password.

     3. Connect to the ICN through a modem or from your ICN-connected
          computer.

If you are using a modem:

          A. Select the appropriate settings on your terminal for

o transmission speed as determined by your modem: 300, 1200,
               2400, or 9600 bit/s;

o 8 bit no parity; and

             o full duplex.

(Watch the Computing and Communications Division News for the
announcement of the availability of the 9600 speed.)

          B. Follow directions for your modem to dial the telephone number
for the open port switch. (This is for Los Alamos dial-up
             facilities only.)

If you are connected directly to an ICN open-port switch and are
already logged on to an ICN computer, log off the machine and
then press <BREAK> (or <SHIFT-BREAK> on a VT100) to get back to
          the open switch menu.

     4. SIGNING ON TO A REMOTE INTERNATIONAL SITE FROM LOS ALAMOS
     ______________________________________________________________________

To access hosts in foreign countries, a special account using BT
Tymnet's TymUSA service must be established for outbound computing.
There is an extra charge for this service. Contact the Communications
Group, C-4, at (505) 667-0705 to set up the account. A special
username and password will be given to you to use only to access a
foreign site. Before attempting the connection, you must find out the
address of the host computer at the remote international site.

The foreign network in which the host is connected will have a four
digit identifier referred to as a DNIC, which directs the call to the
correct country. The rest of the address indicates the host within
that DNIC. The following example shows the login sequence for a call
     to a host in France.

       ==============================================================

Please login: USALAT001:g2322 <RETURN> (g2322 is DNIC for destination country)

       ; 2322 618114411 <RETURN> (DNIC (2322) is echoed, and you type host address (618114411))

       Call Connected

       Login:

       ==============================================================

If you are uncertain of the DNIC for a particular country, call the
     Communications Group (C-4) at (505) 667-0705.

Remember, when you are using a BT Tymnet facility in a foreign
country, your regular Los Alamos BT Tymnet account will allow you to
access Los Alamos. You do not need a TymUSA account.

TYMNET, call the Communications Group, C-4, (505) 667-0705.

5.2. Reporting Problems to BT Tymnet

If you have a problem when trying to access a computer via BT Tymnet,
do not disconnect the call. Instead, go to a nearby telephone to
     report the difficulty.

     1. Call a BT Tymnet customer service number:

       1-800-937-2862

         or

       (215) 666-1770 (Use this number when you are at an overseas
       location with non-WATS access.)

     2. Give the customer service representative the following information:

o Your name and telephone number.

o The BT Tymnet username password that you are using to access a
          computer system.

o A description of your problem.

o The host number/connecting to Los Alamos. (Our host number is
          13890.)

The customer service representative will assign a trouble-report
number to your case. It is a good idea to write this number down in
case you need to communicate further about this matter.

     Standards and Conventions - 14 - September 1992

     APPENDIX A. STANDARDS AND CONVENTIONS
     ______________________________________________________________________

The following standards and conventions are used in C-Division
     publications.

     For Examples

The following standards apply to examples:

o Examples are always enclosed with double lines.

o Each example shows exactly what you type. The example should be
given for a specific operating system and should show the correct
case required by that operating system.

o The parts of the example that you must type are shown in bold
          typeface.

o Explanations are shown in parentheses.

     For Special Keys

These conventions are followed when referring to special keys on the
     keyboard or key sequences:

o Special terminal keys are identified by enclosing them in less
than (<) and greater than (>) signs, also known as angle
brackets. For example, <ESC> means press the escape key (the key
marked with ESC or its equivalent).

o Control sequences are shown as <CTRL-n>. This notation indicates
that you press two keys at once. At the same time, hold down the
control key (the key marked CTRL or its equivalent) and the key
marked n, where n is another character. For example, <CTRL-D>
means hold down the CTRL key while typing the character d.
