The Need for Address Translation

What and Why

Address translations is a process by which an address is converted, or translated, into another address.

Address Translations is needed anytime a call is placed from one network to a second network that uses a different addressing scheme.

Network 'A' is a network that uses 14 digit addresses and Network 'B' requires 5 digit addresses. There has to be a process that will convert the 14 digit address to a usable 5 digit address and vice virsa.
