Douglas,

The HW101 mic circuits were supposedly designed around a specific microphone, 
an Electrovoice 638. I have owned numerous Heathkit HF rigs and each came 
with one of these mics and none exhibited any lack of mic sensitivity.  Look
around and see if you can get ahold of one of these mics and I think you’ll 
be surprised at the results.
