New to FiLMBOX 2.5.2

This section gives a quick run-down of the following

new features and enhancements in the maintenance release

of FiLMBOX 2.5.2:

AVI Audio Rendering

- A bug in FiLMBOX Studio prevented the processing of AVI

  files with audio (Renderer). This problem has been fixed.

  AVI files are now processed with the audio specified in

  the Media tool.

Full-Screen View

- The mouse pointer is now hidden when you switch to

  full-screen view (Ctrl-S).

Lightwave 6.0 Endomorph 1.30

- FiLMBOX Studio 2.5.2 supports Lightwave 6.0 Endomorph

  1.30. You should make the necessary adjustment when

  loading Lightwave 6.0 files. For example, when using

  Voice Reality with Lightwave 6.0, you no longer use

  Morph-Targets or Gizmos for your facial animation, as

  discussed on page 497 of the FiLMBOX Studio 2.5 User’s

  Guide. Lightwave 6.0 now uses EndoMorphs for shape

  animation. EndoMorphs are exported in Lightwave object

  files (.lwo).

Live Video and VideoSync (SGI)

- Live video input and video synchronization have been

  greatly improved.

SDK enhancements

- Routines for live optical capture and writing data

  packets along a network (writedatagram) have been

  improved.

Textures and Media

- A bug in FiLMBOX Studio prevented textures and media from

  being found after reloading. In FiLMBOX Studio 2.5.2,

  when you select a missing texture’s path, FiLMBOX

  attempts to find all other missing textures at the new

  path. In most cases, all missing textures and media are

  found, but there may be a delay while the list of media

  and textures are updated.

Vicon File Support (c3d)

- Support for the Vicon C3D format has been greatly

  improved.

Video Clips

- The Play mode for playing video clips has been optimized.

==========================================

2.0 Support for LightWave 6.0

FiLMBOX 2.5 now supports Lightwave 5.5/5.6 Scene,

Object and gizmo files, as well as the following

6.0 Plug-ins:

==========================================

2.1 Lightwave 6.0 Scene Files (.lws)

1) Import

   FiLMBOX 2.5 only supports Lightwave 6.0

   scene files for importing and exporting. All object

   files (.lwo) MUST be loaded into Lightwave 6.0 Layout

   and saved as a scene file (.lws), then imported into

   FiLMBOX.

2) Export

   In FiLMBOX 2.5, you MUST “merge back” with

   the original Lightwave 6.0 scene file (.lws) that you

   imported into FiLMBOX. Making a backup of this scene

   file is strongly recommended, since it will enable

   you to start the export operation over again.

===========================================

2.2 Lightwave 6.0 Object Files (.lwo)

1) SubPatch Objects

   SubPatch objects are not yet visible

   as a SubPatch surface (coming soon); FiLMBOX 2.5 shows

   a SubPatch object as its polygon mesh source. The

   object file (.lwo) is unaffected and is still a

   SubPatch object when you “merged back” to Lightwave.

   For the moment, the only way to get the SubPatch

   resolution of your object in FiLMBOX is to “Freeze”

   the SubPatch object in Lightwave 6.0 Modeler to make it

   a polygon mesh.

2) Materials

   Multiple materials are supported.

3) Textures

   Only UV textures are supported. Other mapping

   methods give bizarre results. Only use one texture per

   object.

4) TRS Animation

   Translations, Rotations and Scaling animation is supported

   for importing and exporting. Imported keyframes from

   Lightwave 6.0 do not have handles.

5) Bones

   Bone animation is supported for importing and exporting.

6) Weighting

   Standard Bone weighting is supported.Lightwave 6.0 Weight

   Maps are not supported in FiLMBOX.

7) EndoMorphs

   EndoMorphs used with Lightwave 6.0 MorphMixer

   v.1.28 are supported in FiLMBOX 2.5, although the

   MorphMixer v.1.30 (upgrade 6.0b of Lightwave) is not

   yet supported.

Note: Bone and Morph animations are both supported at

the same time on the same object.

=========================================

2.3 Lightwave 6.0 Lights

Multiple Lights are supported for importing and

exporting. Translation and Rotation animation is

supported. Certain Light envelopes are supported in

FiLMBOX: Color, Intensity and Cone Angle. The other

envelopes are not seen in FiLMBOX, but will stay intact

when you "merge back" to Lightwave.

Lights imported into FiLMBOX are represented as follows:

- LW6 Point Light = FB Point Light

- LW6 Spot Light = FB Spot Light

- LW6 Distant Light = FB Infinite Light

- LW6 Linear Light = FB Point Light

- LW6 Area Light = FB Point Light

All lights keep their original light type when you

"merge back" to Lightwave.

=========================================

2.4 Lightwave 6.0 Cameras

Multiple Cameras are supported for importing and

exporting. Translation and Rotation animation is

supported. Camera envelopes are not yet supported in

FiLMBOX, but will stay intact when you "merge back"

to Lightwave.

===========================================

2.5 Future Developments in Lightwave 6.0 support

The following features are under development, and

will be included in future releases of FiLMBOX Studio.

- Object Import/Export capability

- SubPatch object support in FiLMBOX

- Cubic, Spherical and Cylindrical Texture mapping

- Weight Maps for bone deformations

- MorphMixer v.1.30 support

- Import/Export Camera Zoom Factor envelops

============================================

3.0 NLE

The following is a list of the enhancements made to

NLE in the Animation tool:

1) Local Button

   The Local button, located in the Edits

   Pane, lets you designate whether the blend you are

   performing is a General blend (body to body) or a

   Local blend (body part to body).

2) Translation and Speed Fields

   Translation and Speed fields are located in each

   track’s take box. Use these fields to specify a

   translation offset or speed scale increment for

   each track.

3) NLE Function Buttons

   A new pane to the right of the NLE editor contains

   options and buttons that have replaced the

   right-clicking functionality and contextual menus

   of the Cut Area. The buttons are the following:

   - Insert Track & Remove Track

   - Insert Cut & Remove Cut

   - Toggle Loop Mode (for cuts)

   - Match Pivot

   - Clear Pivot

   - Snap On Frame

   - Force Time

   - Adjust Start&End (timecode)

==============================================

4.0 Media Tool

1) Thumbnails

   In the Video pane, you can now view media

   as thumbnails.

2) Remapping All Media

   If the path for media is changed,

   you can remap all media by changing the path for the

   first video clip or image.

3) Deck Control

   A new panel in the Media tool lets you

   add deck control. Version 2.5 only supports Sony 9

   Pin VTR.

===============================================

5.0 New Shaders

The following shaders have been added to the Rendering

tool of FiLMBOX v2.5. These shaders can be applied to

objects or scenes in an animation to produce reflection,

shadow or Z objects (3D mattes).

===============================================

5.1 Reflection Shader

The Reflection shader lets you apply reflection to an

object or scene. The shader features are:

1) Reflection Type Options

   Select one of the following reflection types:

   - Live Planar Reflection: Plane reflecting moving

     objects.

   - Live Planar Reflection On Video: Plane reflecting

     moving objects during a live video feed.

   - Spherical Map: Object reflecting scene.

   - Sphere Map: Object reflecting scene. Fixed camera position.

2) Reflection Intensity

   Sets the amount of reflection applied.

3) Map Generation

   Lets you generate a map of the selected or all the

   objects with the reflection shader applied, or for

   only the selected object.

4) Map Size

   Sets the generated map size. The selected map size

   determines the resolution of the map.

================================================

5.2 Shadow Map Shader

The Shadow shader lets you apply shadow to an object

or scene. The shader features are:

1) Shadow Intensity

   Sets the amount of shadow applied.

2) Map Generation

   Lets you generate a map of the objects with the

   reflection shader applied. The generation types are:

   - Generate Map for Selection

   - Generate Map (for all objects with shader applied)

   - Generate Preview Map for Selection

   - Generate Preview Map (for all objects with shader applied)

3) Map Size

   Sets the generated map size.

4) Light Area Sample Count

   Sets the amount of light area to be sampled. The

   more light area sampled, the higher the resolution

   of the generated map.

5) Light Area Radius

   Sets the light radius distribution.

================================================

5.3 Z Shader

Use the Z Shader to create a 3D matte for a scene.

When Z Shader is applied to a model, the model is

turned into a colorless 3D matte. A 3D matte has

depth, and is therefore respected by all other 3D

objects in the scene. A 3D matte lets you block out

parts of a scene, that are later replaced by video

footage.

================================================

6.0 Character Tool Enhancements

FiLMBOX 2.5 includes the following additions and

enhancements to the Character Tool:

  6.1 Left and right glove support

  6.2	Automatic offset control

  6.3	Simplified plotting data and control set creation

  6.4	Enhanced control over advanced mapping options

================================================

6.1 Cyberglove Support

In FiLMBOX 2.5, the Character tool lets you connect

glove devices to control the left and right hands of

your Actor. This lets you add realistic hand and

finger movement. Gloves may be set as live devices or

contain recorded data. In this version, only Cyberglove

is supported. Future versions may support other glove

manufacturers.

================================================

6.2 Plotting Animation and Creating Control Sets

Plotting data to a character and creating control sets

has been simplified in FiLMBOX version 2.5. To

automatically plot or create a control set, use the

following procedure:

1) Use the Character tool to map data from an optical

   or magnetic source to a character model.

2) In the Character pane, click the Plot Animation

   button. A dialog appears asking you if you want to

   plot data to the character, to a control set, or

   cancel the operation.

   - Character

     Select to plot the data from the optical or

     magnetic source to the character model. The data

     is plotted to the character on the current take.

     NOTE: This option only appears if your character’s

     source is set to Actor Input.

   - Control Set

     Select to create a control set. This option

     creates a hierarchy of nulls and red markers

     containing the plotted data. The source type is

     changed to the new hierarchy (Control Set In) and

     the source is changed to the created control set.

     The new control set lets you create keyframe

     animation over your capture data without altering

     the original data.

   - Cancel

     Click Cancel to abort plotting data to the

     character or a control set.

=============================================

6.3 Automatic Offset Control

If you characterize your character when it is not in

a proper stance pose, you can use the Automatic Offset

pull-down menu at the bottom of the General pane to

add offsets which corrects arms, legs, or hands to the

proper stance pose. Click the Undo Offset button to

undo this correction. The Automatic Offset Control

options are as follows:

1) Arms

   Corrects both arms.

2) Legs

   Corrects legs, adjusting any gap that may have been

   modelled between the legs.

3) Hands

   Corrects hands used when mapping gloves to your

   character.

=================================================

6.4 Advanced Mapping Options

FiLMBOX 2.5 includes the following additions and

enhancements to the Advanced pane in the Character

Tool:

6.4.1 Saving and restoring sets of advanced options

6.4.2 Special Mapping Node

=================================================

6.4.1 Saving and Restoring Advanced Options

The new Advanced Set field (at the top of the Advanced

pane in the Character pane) lets you duplicate, rename,

restore, or delete the current set of advanced mapping

options. The current advanced options are shown in the

Advanced pane. Beside the Advanced Set field, a series

of buttons let you perform the following actions:

1) Duplicate

   Creates a new Advanced set based on the current.

   The new set is named “<Default>” and is selected.

2) Delete

   Deletes the current set of advanced options.

3) Rename

   Lets you rename the current set of advanced options.

4) Restore

   Restores the default advanced options replacing

   the current set of advanced options.

==================================================

6.4.2 Special Mapping Node

The new Special list of mapping nodes is available

when setting-up your character. The Special list

contains a single node, Hips Translation, that lets

you define a second null, bone, or node for your

model’s hip translation. Use the Hips Translation

node if your model uses two nulls, bones, or nodes to

control your model’s hips.

When you specify a Hips Translation node, the selected

node is sent the hips translation data and the original

hips node (Hips in the Base list) is sent the hips

rotation. If you do not specify a Hips Translation

node, both translation and rotation data is sent to

the Hips node.

==================================================

6.5 Batch Processing in the Character Tool

The Character tool contains a new Batch pane that

lets you:

 - Load different files of the same format into the

   same scene, and apply the data to the selected

   character

 - Save all takes mapped to the selected character to

   separate motion files

 - Convert files from one format to another using the

   selected character.

Before using the Batch pane, you must have mapped data

to a character using one of the data files that you

want to load or convert. When you import a motion file

and map its motion to an Actor and then a Character,

you are creating a guide for the Batch pane to convert

the other data files.

For example, you have four motion files stored in

Motion Analysis TRC format and you want to convert

these files to Acclaim AMC format. To convert each

manually, you would have to load each Motion Analysis

TRC motion file, map the data to an Actor and then a

Character, plot the data to the Character, and then

export each Character as an Acclaim AMC file.

The Batch pane simplifies this process by letting you

base all conversion on a single mapped Character. To

convert the same four Motion Analysis TRC files mentioned

above, you only need to load the first Motion Analysis

TRC file and map its data to an Actor and then a

Character. You can then use the character as a guide to

automatically convert the remaining motion files to the

Acclaim AMC format.

As with converting, if you are saving takes, all takes

must contain data mapped to the same character. All

data files or takes must be from the same capture

session, or from the same device.

=====================================================

7.0 Enhancements

FiLMBOX v2.5 includes the following enhancements:

1) Importing and Exporting

   You can now import and export files at a selected

   frame rate. When you import or export a data format

   file, a dialog appears which lets you set the frame

   rate.

2) Video In/Out for SGI 540/ONXY systems

   FiLMBOX now supports Video input and output for

   SGI 540/ONXY systems.
