SoftICE for Windows Millennium Beta

NuMega has completed initial testing of SoftIce for Windows Millennium. The SoftIce debugger.exe image attached to this message can be used by anyone with a license for NuMega DriverStudio 1.5 or SoftICE Driver Suite 1.5. We have not prepared a custom setup kit for the Millennium beta so you must perform the following manual steps to get SoftIce working.

Installation Instructions

1. On a system running Windows Millennium, install the SoftIce for 98/95 kit from DriverStudio 1.5. This is the only version that supports Millennium.
* Do not install the entire DriverStudio suite. It has not been tested on Millennium.
* Click NO when setup asks you to change autoexec.bat.
* Click NO when setup asks you if you want to reboot.

2. Switch to the debug IO.SYS, found.
* Rename the existing IO.SYS to something you will remember. IO.SYS is in the root directory of your system disk.
* Copy WINBOOT.SYS to your root directory, renaming it IO.SYS. WINBOOT.SYS is available in the DDK Directory underneath either me_ddk\fre or me_dkk\chk. You can download the Millennium DDK from ftp://winbeta.microsoft.com/FTP-DDK.

3. Copy the following SoftICE files from the SoftICE install directory to your %WinDir% directory. The default installation directory is 'C:\Program Files\Numega\DriverStudio\SoftIce'.
* winice.exe
* siwvid.386
* winice.dat

4. Copy debugger.exe to %windir%. The debug IO.SYS (was WINBOOT.SYS) looks for a debugger by this name. This version of debugger.exe will load SoftICE.

5. Reboot. SoftICE will load during system initialization.

Note on symbol loading and loader32.exe

The SoftIce debugger uses the copy of winice.dat that is in %WinDir%. The symbol loading utilities such as loader32.exe modify the version in the SoftIce install directory. If you use these utilities to modify winice.dat you will need to copy the modified winice.dat file from your SoftIce install directory to %WinDir%. You may manually edit winice.dat file as an alternative to using loader32.exe.

Support

The only version of Winice.exe that this has been tested against is that included with SoftICE 4.05. We know that the thread command does not correctly show owners. This will be fixed in a future release.
