You should read a book by Umberto Eco called "Foucalt's Pendulum" (sorry 
but I don't remember the publisher).  The main character and his 
associates try reconstructing history by looking for links between 
stories (folklore) about the Templars, Illumanati, etc. as you propose to 
do with the government cover-up stories.  It turns out to be difficult 
(or rather, much too easy) to do.  Read it when you have some spare time, 
I think you would enjoy it.
