Although this starts off describing multiple.org, if you read the whole page you'll understand the history of Dissident and multiple.org.

Multiple.org

Multiple.org was Icon's machine. The name's meaning should be obvious to anyone over 13. Multiple provided lagfree IRC, flexible sysadmins, fast service, and all the benefits of a good unix shell system - for free.

Origins..

Multiple.org's origins begin at the end of 1994, when Lynch decided to get a 28.8k PPP and use that instead of his shell accounts. Within a very short period of time, 5-10 people would be logged into Dissident.com (his PPP's address) and they would be nuking and flashing and raising hell. During January 1995, the users of Dissident brought IRC to its knees by breaking links everywhere and anywhere, colliding, nuking, flashing, and generally raising hell. Since Lynch's PPP wasn't fulltime he looked into the costs of getting a fulltime PPP or ISDN connection, since he really enjoyed having the system.

Around the same time that Dissident was beginning, Icon got a job at one of the Bay Area's best ISP's, Exodus Communications. Since they had a T1 with very little bandwidth utilization, and since Lynch was liked by many Exodus employees, it didn't take long for Dissident to get a high speed ethernet connect to Exodus' T1.

As the user load of Dissident grew, more hardware was added to the system, and it eventually supported an average user load of 30-40 people online at any given time with no lag. Dissident gained a reputation, and was home to many well known IRCers, like |suBZEro|, SrFrog, and dozens more.

As with all good things, Dissident came to an end early in May 1995. A sequence of events unfolded that very quickly led to the once proud Linux machine being converted into two windows boxes at Lynch's home.

The Demise of Dissident..

D-Nice, a user of Dissident as well as a friend of Lynch, had been IRCing from Dissident and Best.com and assaulting a bunch of lamers in the Dissident way. Once of these lamers, Mykroft, was unable to fight back at D-Nice because D-Nice's IRC knowledge was far greater than his. (Come to think of it, my dead goldfish knew more about IRC too..hmm..) Mykroft decided to contact Best.com's president and whine to him about D-Nice's behavior and about Dissident, since Best.com does name service for Dissident. Mykes, the president of Best.com was not happy about this and he removed D-Nice's account. then step 1 of Dissident's damnation took place. He called Exodus and yelled at Icon for an hour about how Dissident was bad and all sorts of stuff like that.

That sealed Dissident's fate and soon afterwards Icon's boss reluctantly told Lynch that Dissident had to go. He basically said that bad blood between Best and Exodus was not wanted and that he had no choice but to remove Dissident.

Since Multiple had a lot more going in its favor than its precursor, everyone expected it to be around for a lot longer. A number of lame users had caused problems from k-lines to possible removal of the system so eventually Multiple.org went private. enjoy it! If you don't.... oh well!

Ironic timing and other such fun

It's now September, 1995, and guess what?! Multiple.org is dead. Killed by foolish users and a narqish/whining sysadmin, the userbase of Dissident/Multiple is once again left to use their less elite system. Ironically, I had just moved Dissident's name service back to my PPP and was about to start working on pages for www.dissident.com. Within a day or so, I suddenly had all of these pages to use. Yes, it was less work, and I am really proud of these pages, but losing Multiple really hurt because I knew the feeling, and I knew how much the few people who were left on Multiple (we purged 90% of the userbase in mid-August) really enjoyed using the system.

So althought you probably never expected to see this system again, Dissident is back.

:P Mykroft, and everyone in .no!

This arrogance brought to you by Lynch. (Who else has an ego THAT big?!)
