WavePOINT Software Description **************************************************** 1.1 Description ==================================================== Lucent Technologies WavePOINT-II Software comprises the * WaveMANAGER/AP program * WavePOINT-II Bridge Firmware * WavePOINT MIBs The WavePOINT software is described in the WavePOINT-II Getting Started Manual and in the on-line Help files. 1.2 Software Versions ==================================================== The following software will be installed in the directory specified during setup: Bridge Firmware: WPNT321.BIN version 3.21 WaveMANAGER: WMAN_AP.EXE version 1.37 WMAN_AP.HLP version 1.35.2 and various support files Readme file (this file): README.TXT WavePOINT-II related MIBs: RFC1213.MIB RFC1398.MIB RFC1493.MIB WaveLAN.MIB WaveNET.MIB WavePOINT problem report form: WPNTPRF.TXT 2. Technical Support **************************************************** If you encounter problems when installing or using this product or have questions about our other WaveLAN products, you can reach us at the addresses listed in the Getting Started Manual. Please use the WavePOINT Problem Report form where applicable and send it to us by Fax or E-Mail. This form is available on the WavePOINT diskette as WPNTPRF.TXT (Plain text format). You can access Product Information, or download the latest Bridge Firmware, Device Drivers, or Software Updates using the internet at: HTTP://WWW.WAVELAN.COM or FTP://FTP.WAVELAN.COM/PUB Alternatively, you can consult the WaveLAN Bulletin Board Service at the numbers listed in the Getting Started Manual that came with your WavePOINT-II or WaveLAN/EAM product. 3. Notes **************************************************** 3.1 PCMCIA adapters ==================================================== Your WavePOINT-II device may not work properly when used in combination with a limited number of older type WaveLAN cards. When you intend to use your WavePOINT-II device in combination with previously purchased WaveLAN, or WaveLAN compatible cards, please verify the partnumber of the PCMCIA card. The partnumber is printed on a small label at the back of the PCMCIA Card (the small card that is inserted in the PC-Card slot). WaveLAN cards with the following partnumbers are not supported by WavePOINT-II. 407-0030740 A-E NCR WaveLAN 407-0030740 F AT&T WaveLAN 407-0031111 x Digital RoamAbout 407-0031211 x WaveLAN 407-0031401 x AT&T WaveLAN 407-0031515 A NEC 407-0031547 A Hitachi 407-0031902 x Lucent Technologies WaveLAN The last character of the partnumber is an alphabetical character in the range A-F. If the partnumber listed above reads 'x', the value applies to all models with this partnumber. When a non-supported card is inserted into the PC-Card slot of your WavePOINT-II product, this is recognized easily, as the device will 'reset' continuously after power-up. Replace the old card(s) with a newer PCMCIA card(s). You can continue using the old cards in combination with your WaveLAN stations. 3.2 BNC Ethernet terminator ==================================================== When you intend to install the WavePOINT-II device without using the 10-Base-2 Ethernet interface, you are advised to terminate the BNC connector using the 50 Ohm terminator provided. Due to the sensitivity of the 10-Base-2 interface of the WavePOINT-II product, failing to do so might lead to 'unexpected' LAN activity on the Ethernet interface. 3.3 Supported Operating Systems ==================================================== WaveMANAGER/AP can be installed on Windows '95 and Windows NT version 4.0 and higher. 3.4 Software installation ==================================================== When the Setup program detects an older version of the WaveMANAGER/AP program, that was previously installed installated on your system, the Setup program will advise you to de-install this software with the 'Add/Remove programs' function of the Control Panel. If this is not successful, ignoring this advise will not have a negative impact on the operation of WaveMANAGER/AP, but you may need to delete the old files and shortcuts manually. 4. Updates and Corrections **************************************************** 4.1 Version 1.03: ==================================================== The WavePOINT-II Bridge Firmware, in combination with the WaveMANAGER/AP program shipped with software release 1.03 and higher, supports full WaveLAN 'Remote Link Test'diagnostics. Remote Link Test enables you to investigate the Link between a Remote WavePOINT-II device and another wireless device within range of the selected WavePOINT-II device. You can initiate a Remote Link Test from any WavePOINT-II device that your WaveMANAGER station can reach via SNMP/IP. When your network includes previously purchased/installed WavePOINT-II devices, these units may not yet support the Remote Link Test feature. To initiate Remote Link Test from these WavePOINT-II devices as well, you may need to upgrade the Bridge Firmware of these units. The procedure to upgrade the Bridge Firmware is described in the helpfile that comes with the WaveMANAGER/AP program. * Press the [F1] function key to open the helpfile and click the 'Index' tab. * Enter the keyword Firmware, or 'Upload Firmware' to access the information about the 'Upload Firmware Procedure'. 4.2 Version 1.04. ==================================================== In version 1.03 of the WavePOINT software, in certain situations the WavePOINT stops operation when a second WaveLAN card is inserted. This problem is solved in version 1.04. The Bridge Firmware (also referred to as bridge kernel) provided in this version also provides additional support for a new version of the WavePOINT-II FlashROM, which will be introduced shortly after this release. OLDER VERSIONS OF THE WAVEPOINT-II BRIDGE FIRMWARE DO NOT FULLY SUPPORT THE NEW FLASHROM, AND MAY HAVE PROBLEMS USING IT. THEREFOR YOU MUST AVOID THE UPLOAD OF PREVIOUSLY RELEASED BRIDGE FIRMWARE INTO (FUTURE) WavePOINT-II DEVICES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE NEW FLASHROM. 5. Outstanding Functional Problems in release 1.04: **************************************************** At the time of release of this software, the following problems remain to be solved: 5.1 Description: Although a TRAP Host can be specified in the SNMP Setup dialog, the WavePOINT-II will not send TRAP messages. Impact: Currently the WavePOINT-II cannot be managed through TRAP messages. Action: None. 5.2 Description: WavePOINT-II units that are powered-on with their factory-set 'out of the box' configuration will send out a BOOTP request to obtain an IP Address from the BOOTP or DHCP server. This request however is not recognised by Microsoft's NT DHCPserver. Impact: The WavePOINT-II does not automaticaly receive an IP address in a DHCP environment. Action: You are advised either to: * use a BOOTP compatible server to assign IP addresses to your WavePOINT-II devices automatically, or * use the WaveMANAGER/AP proggram to assign the IP address to each individual WavePOINT-II device manually. ******************************************************************* END OF FILE
