This is a AXA's collection of various kewl stuff for your BAT, T, or L DSS
test card.


NOTE: All BAT (battery), T, and L cards are built with electronic components
      which are extremely sensitive to ESD (Electro-Static Discharge).  You
      should use EXTREME care when handling or touching your card.  Always
      touch the metal housing on your receiver before inserting or removing
      your test card from the receiver, this drains away any static build-up
      that you may have developed (especially on cold COLD winter days)
      Also; Always handle the card ONLY by it's sides.  Use caution when
      programming card, make sure card is instered into programmer correctly.
      If your card receives any ESD, it will be a DOOR STOP, So be careful!
      If do not understand these procedures, contact your dealer for help!!!


AST     .ENC - sets your card to Atlantic Time Zone
EST     .ENC - sets your card to Eastern Time Zone
CST     .ENC - sets your card to Central Time Zone
MST     .ENC - sets your card to Mountain Time Zone
PST     .ENC - sets your card to Pacific Time Zone
TPATCH  .ENC - patch for MAIN17 to allow time zone setting by remote control
WIPE    .ENC - wipes ALL data off & Deactivates card (reload MAIN to fix)
SEED    .ENC - reloads seed key, time zone & RESETS PARENTAL LOCK PASSWORD
NOSEED  .ENC - cleans out everything in 6000h Block (Try it, Cool results!)
NEWREG  .ENC - clears all MAIN file working registers.  Try for "HUNG" cards
MAIN17P .ENC - this is the code only. Must load WIPE+MAIN17P+SEED to work.

LOAD    .EXE - this accepts .ENC files for use with a parallel programmer
TEN$LOAD.BMP - this windows BMP file describes how to build a $10 programmer
FIX     .BAT - this is a batch file that will make a working card (currently) 

What are ENC files?     These are loaded into your BAT/T/L card by using the
LOAD.EXE program with a parallel programmer, such as the $10 Programmer.
(The $10 programmer can be built in 1 hour with parts from radio shack, the
plans/schematic are in this package as a Windows Paint BMP file: TEN$LOAD.BMP)
There are two versions of all ENC files listed.  If you get a "NO BLOCK ACK"
when running LOAD.EXE, try the files that end with V2 instead, these are for
the v2 (version two) bootstrap L & T cards.


TIME ZONE ENC FILES:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are the .ENC files for setting the time zone correctly on all DSS test
cards.  They will work on ALL BAT, T, or L cards.  Use _ST.ENC for the BAT
cards and v1 L/T cards, and use _STV2.ENC for v2 L/T cards.
Simply load ONLY the desired time zone file into your working card.
Do NOT load anything before or after it.  If you are reloading a new MAIN
file (probably on thursday, HeHe), load the MAIN file first, verify that it
is working in your receiver first, then load the desired time zone file.
Your time zone should now be correctly set when you re-insert the card.
You can reload the zone files anytime & as often as you want to change your
time zone, or to mess with those that set their clocks by the DSS.  :-)
Examples:
LOAD CST.ENC      (this will set a BAT card for Central Time Zone.)
LOAD ESTV2.ENC    (this will set a newer v2 L card for Eastern Time Zone.)


LOAD.EXE:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simply connect your programmer to the LPT1 port on your computer. (you may
have to unplug your printer first)  Then insert the test card CAREFULLY into
the programmer.  (on the $10 Programmer, the chips face DOWN)  Then run
the LOAD.EXE program from a DOS command line, like this:
LOAD MAIN123.ENC (where MAIN123 is the name of the ENC file you wish to load)
It will report: "Port not initialized: Please remove & reinsert card" when
you run it for the first time.  Just hit enter.
The LOAD.EXE program will report one of three things:

LOAD SUCCESSFUL, xx BYTES SENT - Everything loaded ok, You are done!

TIMED OUT...NO BYTE ACK - You card isn't responding, Try removing it and then
                          re-inserting it several times.  Make sure it is in
                          the right way, and that the 9-volt battery, if any,
                          in you programmer is good.  Also check the LPT port.

TIMED OUT...NO BLOCK ACK - This usually means you are using the wrong version
                           of ENC file.  Try loading the V2 version next. 


THE $10 PROGRAMMER:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The plans & schematic for this easy to build device are in the Windows BMP
file called "TEN$LOAD.BMP".  View or print this file with the Windows "Paint"
accessory.  These plans assume you know enough about electronics to read a
schematic and that you can solder competently.  There are only three parts
needed and they are available at most Radio Shack stores for under $10 US.
If your Radio Shack does not have them, or you have a well-stocked electronic
"junk-box" you can also obtain these devices in commonly used products:

Find it in: Almost any digital consumer electronics gadget that is powered by
            a wall-plug transformer.  Looks like a transistor, look in old
            answering machines, Nintendo games, Satellite Receivers, etc....

9-Volt Battery
if you can't find this- you probably don't have AC power at home, and don't
need a DSS system anyway! :-)
NOTE: DO NOT substitute a wall-plug transformer or any other AC derived power
      supply for this battery.  The circuit lacks filtering and protection,
      and your card could be damaged by doing this.

There is no power switch, per-se.  The power is automatically turned on when
you plug the programmer into the printer port.  MAKE SURE you remove it when
you are not using it, as you will soon have a dead battery if you do not.
With a fresh 9-volt, you should be able to easily program over 5000 cards, or
one card 5000 times (once every thursday, at least!)

If you use the Radio Shack Edge-Card connector, or any other that the card
is too narrow for, cut the connector with a hack-saw to fit.  Leave room for
you to add some kind of "stopper" to force the card to line up correctly.
I used epoxy to do this on my prototype.  I saw someone who put a screw in
the connector to stop the card, there are plenty of options.
NOTE: PROVIDE SOME WAY TO LINE THE CARD UP IN THE PROGRAMMER, OTHERWISE
      YOU COULD "BLOW" YOUR CARD PERMANENTLY - IT WILL BE A DOOR STOP!
