A Little Hasidic Village In Upper New York

A village of 20,133 Jews that gets massive funding for any project they want. The latest is a postpartum center, that cost $11.2 million dollars, of which 95% was Federal and State funds.

A Restricted Community

Kiryas Joel claims they are the remnants of Szatmarnemeti, Hungary, whose 12,000 Jewish residents were deported to Auschwitz.

The town consists of 20,071, and is 100% Hasidic.

The Are A Kingdom Onto Themselves

You don't enter this community without an invitation.

The Nearby Towns Are Afraid

Sitting next to this nest is a small Christian town of Monroe NY, and they constantly live in fear. If a kid is late coming home, they will quickly be out combing the neighborhoods.

The Mysterious Fire, And A Miraculous Rescue

There was a previous postpartum care home in Kiryas Joel but caught fire in 1996, and there was a huge insurance settlement.

In order to maximize the publicity, the local Hasidics claimed that neo Nazis attacked in the middle of the night.  34 mothers and their 35 babies dove out of windows, and all survived.

The Post Birthing Center

The total cost of the center is $11.4 million,  and ten state and federal grants have been awarded so far, for a total of $10.5 million.

Three stories high and encompassing almost 50,000 square feet, the women's services center stands as a testament to the grant-seeking ingenuity and political savvy of the leaders of this community of 21,000 people.

Money Flows To This Village

On April 16, 2008, Sens. Charles Schumer, Hillary Clinton sponsored a bill that gave the village a $3 million grant.  7

Politicians In Their Pocket

Pataki alone steered five grants totaling $5.6 million to Kiryas Joel for the project, according to grant documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Law and officials at the funding agencies.

State Funded Schools

The state funds special schools, and nearby kids aren't allowed to attend.

The unusual lifestyle and growth pattern of Kiryas Joel has led to litigation on a number of fronts. Most noted in legal circles is the Grumet decision about school district boundaries; but there has also been litigation over what entity should pay for the education of children with disabilities in Kiryas Joel.

They even have a local poultry plant, that was built with small business administration loans.

No Schwartzers Allowed

The racial makeup of the village was 99.02% White, 0.21% African American, 0.02% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population. 8

Aren't They Special

Amazing how they get exclusive schools, medical, or whatever they need. Naturally these kids will get scholarships to the finest universities. As for serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Iran, I would say a good guess is not a single one of them will be in uniform.
