It’s 2007 And All Of Paris Weeps For Irene Nemirosky

60 years after Irene's death in Auschwitz her daughter transcribes the mother’s diaries and manuscript, and the Goncourt prize winning novel, ‘Suite Francaise’ is born.

It is the most important descriptive wartime writing since Anne Frank's Diaries.

 Irene's Journey From A Baby Irene, To Paris Socialite, To The Gas Chambers 

Born in 1903 in Kiev, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish banker, Irène fled Russia in 1918, and arrived with her family in France the following year

Irene becomes the ' Belle of Paris '

 Irene moves to Paris where she leads the privileged life of balls, banquets and beaux between Paris, Biarritz and the Cote d'Azur . Her gala life now turns to writing and she is toasted as the most talented and celebrated authors of her day, "the Francoise Sagan of the time".

Irene weds  

In 1926 Irène married Michel Epstein, an emigré Russian businessmen, and the couple had two daughters; Denise, born in 1929, and Elisabeth, in 1937.

Nazis Are Coming And French Gentiles Abandon Irene

The French government collaborates with the Nazis and sell the Jews out. Michel was barred from working for his bank, and Irène, the toast of Paris just months before, was dropped like a stone by the literary establishment and no longer able to publish under her own name

Irene's hatchlings are sent to the French countryside

Irene and Michel dispatched the girls to the small Burgundy village of Issy-l'Evêque in September 1 1939. "All the time we were in that village, I just remember mother writing, writing, writing," Denise, now 75, told the Guardian.

In 1941 Irene goes into hiding 

The parents followed their daughters to the country in 1941. She writes day and night knowing the Gestapo is searching for her. Irene knows her final work will be published posthumously."

French Gendarmes arrest Irene 

Gendarmes arrested Irène on July 13 1942, days after finishing the second volume, Dolce. Her daughter said "She was very dignified when they captured Momma”

It's Off To Auschwitz

"She just said she was going on a journey." Irène was gassed within 10 days of arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau, dying on August 17. Michel was arrested two months later

Entire Family Gassed

The husband Michael along with his two brothers and sister perished, in the Auschwitz gas chambers.

Good Nazi Spares Daughters

Denise and Elisabeth, were spared, because they reminded a German officer of his own child.

Daughters hide in root cellars, attics and convents 

Hatchlings hide in a root cellar for the next two years,  were cared for by a Catholic woman who moved them from one safe house to another.

 In 1970 The Daughter Remembers She Has The Diaries

Then in the mid-1970s, after it was nearly destroyed when her Paris apartment was flooded, she decided with her sister to entrust it to the French publishing industry's memorial archives.

Daughter forced to rewrite miniature diary

The daughter had to rewrite it because her Momma wrote in miniature to save ink. Denise needed a large magnifying glass and a great deal of patience. "I couldn't do that without making a copy," she said. "I started to transcribe it."

Jewess had some liens on books

The daughter had to settle some lawsuits before she could publish. The same thing occurred with Otto Frank when he had to pay Meyer Levin $50,000 for 'Help' on the Anne Frank Diary.
