Develop a basic understanding of some of the most popular digital image applications for design. The goal of this course is to teach students how to create documents, manipulate images and text, and format and manage files through lectures, software demonstrations and hands-on experience in the computer lab. Applications used may include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, QuarkXPress and/or Flash. A glossary of hardware, software and peripherals is also introduced so that students have an overview of useful tools. Projects focus on various aspects of design, providing a solid foundation for further study in design for print and digital media.
Prerequisite: Students must possess basic computer proficiency in order to keep up with the curriculum of this course. Those unfamiliar with Mac OSX must take The ABCs: Absolutely Basic Computer Skills.
Applies to the following certificate programs: AD-R, AN-R, CB-R, CG-R, DI-R, NS-R, VE-R, WE-R

As we live in an information age, the manner in which we convey information becomes all important. In this course, students use Macromedia's Flash to create moving representations of scientific and technical concepts that are not immediately apparent to the naked eye. Whether it be a torn rotator cuff or a race horse's gait , animation is the ideal tool to illustrate motion-dependent ideas for depiction in a video or on the web. Graphs, tables and maps can also be designed with an eye for describing changing data sets that are more clearly read and interpreted. Over the course of 12 sessions, students combine their basic understanding of Flash and cyclical animation to create three projects that both educate and inform.
Prerequisite: Flash I: Web Animation + Interactivity or equivalent
