On November 10, 1988, The New York Times carried carried an article to
mark the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht ("Time 'Too Painful' to
Remember," Ari L. Goldman).
It included this recollection by Morris Hubert, a onetime Buchenwald
inmate:

The story
"In the camp there was a
cage with a bear and an eagle, and every day, they would throw
a Jew in there. The bear would tear him apart and the eagle would pick
at his bones."
"But that's unbelievable," whispered a visitor.
"It is unbelievable," said Mr. Hubert, "but it happened."

The Buchenwald Trial
Roosevelt, and Morgentheau, had established a special tribunal of
Jewish prosecutors and judges, and they ran the Nuremberg trials.

The Buchenwald Trial
In this trial, before a U.S. military tribunal at
Dachau, from the 11th April 1947 to the 14th August 1947, Thirty-one
members of the staff of the
Buchenwald camp were found guilty of atrocities and
twenty-two were sentenced to death,
eight being subsequently commuted, the rest to various terms of
imprisonment. Twelve of the defendants were executed on various dates.

The Commandant's Wife
Ilse Koch was known as the “Bitch of Buchenwald”
for her bestial cruelty and sadistic behavior. She was especially fond
of riding her horse through the camp, whipping any prisoner who
attracted her attention.
Ilse would specially select prisoners with distinctive
tattoos on her rides around the camp. These prisoners would be killed
and their skin tanned and stored for later use by the
SS guards. Her taste for collecting lampshades made from the
tattooed skins was described by a witness at

Ilsa Koch Was A Monster
Prisoners there were locked in the
doghouses, chained by the neck, and forced to lap up their
food from a bowl. Anyone failing to bark when Koch walked
by received twenty-five lashes with a cane. Koch had one
prisoner beaten senseless, then ordered guards to stop up
his anus with hot asphalt and force him to drink castor
oil.
