L0pht Heavy Industries inherited a full-size Battlezone arcade game a few
years back. At one time, it worked fairly well, randomly losing power once
in a while. Eventually, the whole thing just stopped working, and acted
as a decoration piece. I have taken it upon myself to fix this fine
vector-graphics based machine.
Here is the front view of the game. Our machine has the footstand and
viewfinder (for true tank simulation!). The controls are a bit flaky, so
replacements may be necessary (possibly just potentiometers). The front
marquee and side graphics are in fairly good shape.
Here is the logic board as seen
from the back of the Battlezone. It consists of two boards (as you can see
here), mostly TTL ICs but also a Z-80 microprocessor and 8 EPROMs.
Here is the power supply board
(lower-right) and the coin-mechanism (middle). There isn't much to see here,
but I put this up so you can see what makes up this beast. The piece of paper
taped to the back are various
DIP-switch settings for different types of gameplay.
Recently, I have re-seated all the socketed IC's on the boards, and the
game functions well. When time allows, I will be doing a Battlezone permanent high score fix. This upgrade
will allow Battlezone high scores to be remembered while the machine is
switched off.
