I remember reading books about Prison Camps during war where cigarettes were used as currency. Anything people will accept in trade for their goods and services is money. Historically Gold and Silver have been the most acceptable commodities that also served as money. For an excellent discussion of this see Murray Rothbards "What has Government Done to Our Money?". Free people can demand anything they wish in return for their goods and services. If we consider ourselves to be free people we should start acting like it and see how well free markets can work for us. All the tools for doing this are available it just takes effort.
