.:: Ball Lightning / Plasma Generation ::.

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to create ball lighting via microwave stimulated plasma and observe its behavior in the elecromagnetic field.

Materials:

- Basic 2.458GHz resonant cavity (w/ 1kW magnetron)
- Small flame (peice of lit paper)
- Plate or non flamable surface (to protect the base of the microwave cavity)

Procedure:

- Place small flame on a plate
- Place the plate inside the microwave cavity (oven)
- Activate the magnetron
- Turn off after a few seconds of ball lightning to avoid dammage to cavity

Images:

The following series of images were taken from a video recording of the experiment. There is a 33.4mS delay between each frame. There are 4 different sequences of various balls of plasma rising.

This clip shows plasma being stimulated by microwave (2.45GHz) and then with carbon in the system.

Results:

After analyzing these sequences the following conclusions and approximations can be made.

- Plasma ball rises about 100mS after formation (after the first formation)
- Plasma balls can be maintained for up to about 300mS
- Plasma balls can remain in flight for up to about 200mS
- Plasma ball diameter can reach about 10cm
- Plasma rise velocity reaches a maximum of about 1.5m/s to 2.0m/s (in still air)
- If a small plasma ball begins to rise another one often follows it because of the remaining power which is enough to support another small plasma ball
