.:: Explosively Powered EMP Device ::.

Purpose:

This project demonstartes the inner workings of an explosively powered single use EMP device.

Materials:

- Al Tube
- Uninsulated 18AWG Copper Wire
- Small Pulse Cap
- C4 or Plastex Explosive
- Primer Cap
- Other small parts

Details:

This side view cross sectional diagram shows how the EMP device is constructed. We can see that at the start of the explosion the Al pipe begins to expand and strike the copper coil. Upon doing so it decreases inductance and raises the energy and resonance frequency of the LCR circuit. If properly coupled to an antenna having the length of 1/2 or 1/4 the most dominant wavelength then the energy can efficiently be radiated. An important thing to keep in mind is the voltage rating of the pulse cap. The longer the cap can withstand the rising voltage the more energy can be delivered to the antenna before dielectric breakdown. An advantage of this EMP device is that no special timing circuitry is necessary since the discharge begins after the explosion has ripped the front of the Al pipe to the sides and touches the coil.

Ruler is initially oscillated then shortened (953kB)
This demo shows how reduction in either capacitance or inductance (after pulse) will increase frequency and amplitude of the oscillation. In the case of a ruler the energy is discipated as sound.
