ARE YOU AN unwitting human guinea pig, the subject of some covert bio-war or mind control experiment? Are your children? The short answer is that you don't know, and yeah, you might be. But don't take my word for it. I don't imagine this stuff. I read it. You can too. Check my sources. Check their sources. See for yourself.
Covert chemical-biological warfare (CBW) research and covert mind control (MC) research are inextricably intertwined. I drew this conclusion not in a fit of paranoid imagination, but in the Berkeley Public Library. I was studying bio-war, trying to trace the origin of AIDS. I had gotten as far back as the numerous allegations that the United States used biological warfare during the Korean War. Specifically, I was pursuing their connection to the post-WWII diaspora of Nazi and fascist scientists and their effect on the culture of the American CBW research community. It was a very productive line of research, in more ways than one.
One day the name Allen Dulles came up. Bells went off immediately. Not only was Allen Dulles partly responsible for setting up the escape of large numbers of Nazi and Ustashi fugitives and their loot via the Vatican's infamous Rat Line, but before the war he had worked at I.G. Farben's New York law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell. Dulles also served for many years as head of the CIA. After the Bay of Pigs fiasco, he was fired from that job by President Kennedy. Shortly thereafter Kennedy met his untimely, if not unexpected end. Dulles served on the notorious Warren Commission which, to the surprise of very few people indeed, concluded that there "was no conspiracy" involved with the murder. Dulles, eh? Now that sounded like a clue. I threaded the microfilm into the reader.
On April 16, 1953, the New York Times reported:
The techniques and effects of organized mind perversion of individuals by Communist Governments, which the Chinese have given the name "brainwashing," was the subject of a very informing speech just made by the chief of the Government's principle unit engaged in collecting such information and determining its accuracy. To Princeton University alumni, meeting last Friday at Hot Springs, Va., Allen W. Dulles, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, reviewed the process thoroughly and made this comment:
The Communists are now applying the brain-washing techniques to American prisoners in Korea and it is not beyond the range of possibility that considerable numbers of our own boys there might be so indoctrinated as to be induced, temporarily at least, to renounce country and family.
Soon this possibility will be tested at first-hand, after the exchange of prisoners of war in Korea. Already the Communists have broadcast what they represent to be the recorded voices of a colonel and a major of the United States Marine Corps, captured in July, giving (said Dulles) "in the greatest detail fictitious information regarding preparations for bacteriological warfare in Korea."

. . . what Director Dulles said:
The human mind, "the most delicate of all instruments, is so finely adjusted, so susceptible to the impact of outside influences, that it is proving a malleable tool in the hands of sinister men. The Soviets are now [perverting it] as one of their main weapons in prosecuting the cold war."
In Hitler's Germany and Fascist Italy an attempt was made to standardize all human thinking, a process called by the Germans "gleichgestaltung," the leveling procedure. Its effect, while it may not have been permanent on the German mind, conditioned vast numbers of Germans to follow Hitler completely.
Japan's thought control seems to have had little permanent effect, though it was highly efficient in "combating sedition" and constructing "apparent unity behind an intense nationalism."
Sound familiar? It ought to. "Combating sedition" is political repression by another name. Doing it by means of propaganda is mass mind control. "Nationalism" is the exact same thing as patriotism. By Dulles's definition, when a child in Cuba is being taught to love Cuba, he is being brainwashed. Ergo, when a child in America is being taught to love America, he is being brainwashed. It's a hard position to argue with. The logic is ineffable.
As for whether the POW's confessions were "fictitious information" or not, I strongly recommend that you read A Higher Form of Killing: The Secret Story of Chemical and Biological Warfare, by Robert Harris and Jeremy Paxman, ISBN 0-8090-5471-x, before you draw any conclusions.
In this speech Dulles was not only giving an excuse for the confessions, he was also warning America that the Reds were significantly ahead of us in the science of mind control. Throughout the cold war the intelligence community, the CIA in particular, regularly raised money in Congress by bemoaning the alleged superiority of Communist military capability. In retrospect, we now see that they were, at best, deeply mistaken. Or else they were lying through their teeth. Opinions vary.
What Dulles was talking in this speech was the need to close the brainwash gap. Dulles was an influential man. Soon MKULTRA was under way. MKULTRA was a vast covert array of both chemical and electronic mind-control projects. It had more than 150 sub-projects. How much of what came to be known as MKULTRA was already in process at the time of Dulles's speech we'll never know. Even now, only glimpses of MKULTRA's history have ever surfaced because the overwhelming majority of the records were ordered destroyed by '70s-era CIA director Richard Helms. Despite the stalwart efforts of numerous activists, how many thousands of innocent victims MKULTRA claimed will never be known.
A few of these cases do occasionally come to light, though, sometimes through court cases. Canadian member of Parliament David Orlikow's wife, Val Orlikow, had suffered a bout of depression following the birth of their daughter and had sought help at the leading psychiatric hospital in Canada, the Allan Memorial Institute at McGill University in Montreal. Under the "care" of the director of the institute, Dr. D. Ewen Cameron, Val was given injections of LSD and was exposed to what Dr. Cameron called "psychic driving," a procedure used nowhere else, in which tape-recorded messages were played hundreds of thousands of times. Cameron's work had been subsidized by the U.S. CIA as part of a secret program to study techniques of brainwashing. For the rest of the Orlikow case story, click here.
In 1977 a U.S. Senate subcommittee chaired by Sen. Ted Kennedy was convened to investigate the CIA's testing of LSD on unwitting citizens. Frank Olsen was one such citizen. After drinking punch the CIA had spiked with LSD, Olsen became terribly frightened of cars, thinking they were monsters out to get him. Before the CIA could make arrangements to treat him, Olsen checked into a hotel and threw himself out of his tenth story room. Or he was thrown out the window. Opinions vary.
At the time he began to babble in public Frank Olsen was employed in very sensitive, very secret biological warfare research. Though it didn't leak out for nearly three decades, in 1947 the U.S. government had acquired the WWII bio-war research data accumulated by Gen. Shiro Ishii, a man known as the "Japanese Mengele." At least some of this research was done on American POWs. Some were dissected alive with samurai swords while Ishii and his colleagues lectured. Ishii developed, among other things, ceramic plague bombs that were used against Chinese civilians. Whether Ishii and Olsen ever met is not known. According to the official version, Ishii never entered the country, let alone the labs at Ft. Detrick. Also according to the official version, America hired the Japanese Mengele, but did not also hire the German Mengele. If you believe that, I know where there's some dandy lakeshore property you're sure to want to invest in.
At the time of Olsen's death the U.S. government was under credible accusation in the world's press of using ceramic plague bombs identical in design to the ones developed by Ishii. What's more, covert bio-war experiments on unwitting American citizens was already in high gear. So no, I don't think the U.S. government wanted Frank Olsen babbling in public. But he babbled. Then, as they say, he jumped, fell, or was pushed. Which do you think it was?
Over the years, the U.S. has conducted a vast number of scientific experiments on human subjects without their consent or knowledge. They include the exposure of at least 9,000 human subjects, including children and newborns to radiation testing by the Atomic Energy Commission, and the Tuskegee experiments, in which some 400 African American subjects were slowly and systematically tortured to death and then dissected. Three years before Dulles's "fictitious information" speech, the entire San Francisco Bay Area was sprayed with a bio-war "simulant." Eleven people were hospitalized with the rare pneumonia it caused. One guy died. The story only began to leak out after two and a half decades. In 1931 people were injected with radium as a "cure" for schizophrenia. Thanks to former Department of Energy secretary Helen O'Leary we finally heard about it six and a half decades later. Shortly thereafter O'Leary lost her job.
So what I'm wondering now is what they are doing to unwitting human guinea pigs today, at this very moment, that we won't hear about for two or three decades, maybe longer. Am I paranoid to do so? I don't think so.
