// XL Box // // by dual_parallel // // http://www.oldskoolphreak.com The XL Box is all about convenience. It extends, pun intended, the capabilities of the everyday beige box and makes the act of beige boxing a little less overt. Let me digress for a moment and discuss modularity. It's good to hone your soldering skills, and pretty fun to boot, but beige boxes are best built with modular components. Modular components allow you to keep the RJ-11 capability of your phone-turned-beige box. It also allows the interchanging and inclusion of components as need arises - line status indicators, music-on-hold boxes and other boxes. And adding modularity won't add too much more to the cost of your boxes if you scrounge for parts in the right places. Back to the XL Box. The XL Box starts with a long run of modular phone cord - 25, 50, 100 feet or more. It can have mod plugs on both ends, one or neither. The end product will have alligator clips on the tip and ring (green and red, respectively) of one end and connect to your beige box on the other. How you get there is up to you, but consider whether or not you want to dedicate 100' of mod cord to one beige box. Implementation is fundamentally the same as a normal beige box, but now you have more leeway. If you've got a regular spot, you can leave the XL Box connected for boxing convenience. If you have a prospective spot, but cover is some distance away, the XL Box is your answer. A simple box that can add immensely to your nightly adventures, the XL Box deserves a spot in your phreak toolkit. Wear gloves if you're leaving your XL Box behind, and be safe so you may "phreak another day."
