14-Channel Two-Way Family Radio
(210-1804) Batteries Faxback Doc. # 50779
Installing Batteries
Your radio uses four AAA batteries for power. You can use alkaline
batteries, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-558.
You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, such as Cat. No.
23-127, and charge them while they are in the radio. The nickel-cadmium
batteries must be charged before you use them (see "Charging Nickel
Cadmium Batteries", below.)
CAUTION: Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries
(standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries
of different capacities.
Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. Rotate VOLUME fully counterclockwise, then slide off the battery
compartment cover in the direction of the arrow on the cover.
2. Set NI/AL inside the compartment to AL (for alkaline batteries) or NI
(for nickel-cadmium batteries).
WARNING: Never set NI/AL to NI if you are installing non-rechargeable
batteries. Non-rechargeable batteries can get hot or explode if
you try to recharge them.
3. Install the batteries, matching the polarity symbols (+ and -) inside
the compartment.
4. Replace the cover.
The radio's range decreases as the battery power decreases. To ensure
maximum range, keep fresh batteries in the radio.
Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
1. Rotate VOLUME fully counterclockwise, then slide off the battery
compartment cover.
2. Set the NI/AL switch in the battery compartment to NI, then install
the batteries.
3. Remove the cover from the radio's CHG jack and connect the barrel plug
of an external AC adapter (Cat. No. 23-249) to the jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
Before you use nickel-cadmium batteries for the first time, charge them in
the radio at least 24 hours to bring them to a full charge.
CAUTION: The recommended AC adapter has a 5.5 mm outer diameter/2.1 mm
inner diameter barrel plug with a center positive tip that
correctly fits the radio's CHG jack. Using an adapter that does
not meet these specifications could damage the radio or the
adapter.
Notes: Nickel-Cadmium batteries last longer and deliver more power if you
occasionally let them fully discharge. Discharged batteries take
about 10 to 18 hours to fully recharge.
To prevent damaging nickel-cadmium batteries, never charge them in
an area where the temperature is above 113 degrees F (45 degrees C)
or below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C).
