Two-Way Family Radio (Black)
(210-1803) Power Faxback Doc. # 51787

Installing Batteries

Your radio uses four AAA batteries for power. We recommend alkaline
batteries (RadioShack Cat. No. 23-877).

You can also use Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries (Cat. No. 23-127) and charge
them in the radio with an AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1662). See "Charging
Rechargeable Ni-Cd Batteries" below.

1. Be sure the radio is off, then pull the belt clip down and slide it
off. (See "Using the Belt Clip" in Faxback Doc. # 51789.)

2. Press the tab at the bottom of the battery compartment cover and lift
    the cover to remove it.

3. Slide Charge On/Off to On (for rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries) or Off
    (for alkaline batteries).

4. Install the batteries, matching the polarity symbols (+ and -) inside
    the compartment.

5. Replace the cover. Then reinsert the belt clip if desired.

CAUTION: Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries
(standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries
          of different capacities.

The radio's range decreases as battery power decreases. To ensure maximum
range, keep fresh batteries in the radio. If a tone sound while the radio
is idle or receiving, replace the batteries.

When the batteries weaken, a tone sounds for about 5 seconds, the radio
will not transmit or receive, and an error tone sounds whenever you press
PTT, MON, or CALL. Replace the batteries.

Charging Rechargeable Ni-Cd Batteries

Before using the radio with rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries, you must charge
the batteries for 24 hours.

1. Be sure the radio is off then slide Charge On/Off to On. Attach the
    AC adapter's 5.5 mm outer-diameter/2.1 mm inner-diameter barrel plug
to the AC adapter and set the tip to positive (+).

2. Plug the adapter into the DC input jack.

Note: The jack is for charging Ni-Cd batteries only. Connecting an
adapter, even with Charge On/Off set to Off, will not power the
           radio.

3. Connect the other end of the adapter to a standard AC outlet.

    TONE FREQUENCY (Hz) 1 2 3 4

       position.
