Judge detained for taking bribes
A judge has been arrested in the western
province of Izmir on allegations he released a
gang leader and his brother after accepting a bribe, daily Sabah reported.
Prosecutor Murat Gök, who is known for heading
critical gang busting operations, ran the
operation against the judge, identified as “A.K”
in the newspaper's report. Vedat Orhan Çelenk,
who was arrested for allegedly being a gang
leader and later given a prison sentence of 101
years, sent a letter to prosecutor Gök saying
some lawyers had offered to get him released by
bribing the judge of the tenth branch of the Court for Serious Crimes Court.
The prosecutor then placed a bugging device in
the judge's room, which is just below the
prosecutor's room in the courthouse. Gök also
placed bugging devices in the cars of the lawyers who were suspects.
The prosecutor and police followed the judge
and lawyers for six months and concluded the
judge had made an agreement with Çelenk for his
release. In the trial Wednesday, the judge
released Çelenk and his brother, Ayhan Çelenk,
leading the prosecutor to arrest him and nine lawyers.
A total of 17 people have been arrested in the
same operation. Vedat Orhan Çelenk alleged the 1
million euros was demanded from him for the
release but that they agreed on YTL 350,000.
