The client may have been just using the question as a simple filter to
determine whether if the sweeper knew if his ass was bored or punched.

 I remember reading an interesting piece by a retired electrical
engineer in the U.K. He stated that whenever a newly minted engineer
came looking for a job, he always finished the interview by taking the
chap an empty office and giving him a simple problem. It was to
determine the resistance of a rather basic diamond shaped circuit
constructed of about two dozen resistors in a network using series
and parallel combinations. He said it was amazing as to how few could
actually calculate the correct answer.
