I happen to be a good friend to a retired
FBI man who was as the very top of that
particular pyramid. He told me (first hand
to him, thus second to me, and now third to
you) that Ben Bradlee once gave a talk at
to a couple of dozen top men at FBI HQ in
which he said that he (Bradlee) did not have
a duty to tell the truth but rather a duty
to sell newspapers. My friend found this
believable.
