Subject: Section Emergency Test

Our annual Simulated Emergency Test (SET) is just around the corner.
Make plans to participate in this exciting on-air test of our
capabilities on Saturday, October 3rd, starting at 10:00 AM. Our
exercise will focus on railroad emergencies, and to help get you ready
for SET, we've created a series of short training modules that will be
part of your local ARES nets this week.=20
=20
You can find MP3 files of the training, along with information about
railroad communications, and other handouts on the Alabama ARES web
site at:=20
http://www.arrl-al.org/Alabama_SET.htm<http://www.arrl-al.org/Alabama_SET.h=
tm>
=20
We're calling the exercise, "Operation Highball" and we'll be
coordinating our efforts through reports to the Alabama Emergency
Management Agency station, KF4LQK. From there our Acting SEC, Mike
Watkins, WX4AL will be gathering reports from around the state, and
passing that information along to our served agencies, just as we would
in a real disaster.=20
=20
You can participate on your local ARES FM repeater, by checking into
the state ARES HF Net on 3965 KHz, via our D-STAR repeater network, or
using digital modes such as PSK-31 on 3570 KHz (USB). The important
thing is to get on the air, and make sure that your station is ready
for a real emergency.=20
=20
We also hope to see other emergency communications groups such as
SKYWARN, ALERT, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, SATERN, and the
Salvation Army join in, and we've created a special "EMCOMM Group"
category to encourage their participation. If you're a member of both
ARES and one of these groups, you're allowed to participate in more
than one net.=20
=20
Check with your local Emergency Coordinator and ask them about their
plans for your specific area. If you're also a member of an EMCOMM
group, consult with your leaders about their plans for SET. Several
have already committed to being a part of this year's exercise.=20
=20
Last year, the Alabama Section was ranked fourth the nation for our
efforts during the Simulated Emergency Test, and we can do even better
this year. All Aboard for Operation Highball!
