Private eyes 'defrauded worried resident'
July 10, 2008 | By Rae Wilson

Three people – two female private investigators
and a man – have been accused of defrauding a
Sunshine Coast woman who believed her house was
bugged and she was being watched.

The three were supposed to face court yesterday
but their lawyer successfully applied for the
case to be adjourned until September.

Noosa HeadsÂ’ Kathleen Joan Kitchner, 53, and Lake
CooroibahÂ’s Corinne Martell, 46, ran a private
investigation business called Private Eyes 007.

The daughter of the Nambour woman alleged to be
their victim told the media last month: “I saw
their credentials. They acted like professionals,
they acted almost like the police – you know, evidence bags and rubber gloves.”

The daughter said they had charged $85 an hour to
perform a bug sweep of the house.

The private investigators have been charged with
entering a home to commit an offence, and fraud
by dishonestly obtaining a sum of money.

Ms Martell was also charged with attempted fraud.
Her son, Shane Martell of Ringtail Creek, was
charged with entering the dwelling and fraud.

Police will allege the 24-year-old climbed into
the roof of the Highview Avenue home on a second
visit to the house and produced a fake listening
device, confirming the 55-year-old female residentÂ’s suspicions.

The womanÂ’s daughter, 32, had contacted a spyware
agency on June 3 about the possibility of a bug
sweep, and Private Eyes 007 was allegedly recommended.

Ms Kitchner and Ms Martell allegedly attended the
house on June 4 and said they had identified high
readings for listening devices. They allegedly
returned on June 6 with Mr Martell and claimed to find the fake device.

They also allegedly talked about the benefits of
installing expensive surveillance cameras and introducing security patrols.

But on June 7 the daughter contacted police about
whether and why there was surveillance equipment in the house.
