LONDON (AP)--An editor with Britain's News of the World tabloid and a
former soccer player were granted bail Wednesday at their first court
appearance since being charged with hacking into the voicemail system
in Prince Charles' office.
Clive Goodman, 48, of London, an editor of the News' royalty section,
is at the center of the investigation, charged with one count of
conspiring to intercept messages and eight counts of intercepting
messages between January and May.
The newspaper has since suspended him.
Glenn Mulcaire, 35, head of Nine Consultancy in central London, was
charged with the same offenses.
The men, dressed in suits, spoke only to confirm their names, ages
and addresses.
They were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 29.
Both were arrested Aug. 8, along with an unidentified man who was
later released after a seven-month investigation led by antiterrorist police.
Officials at the prince's Clarence House office told police they
suspected their messages had been intercepted.
Authorities said they are working with phone companies to examine if
security of other public figures has been compromised.
Police also searched the offices of News International -parent
company of News of the World - in east London.
Detectives were investigating if the tabloid intercepted messages
from Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell about her break up from husband
David Mills, The Times reported.
Mills was indicted in a tax fraud case involving former Italian
Premier Silvio Berlusconi who has been ordered to stand trial on
charges of false accounting and embezzlement.
Charles' office and Hayley Barlow, a News of the World spokeswoman,
declined to comment.
