I would like to hear about who the PI was who was using the
equipment, get close pictures of the actual package, copies of the
X-Ray images, etc.

Bomb scare ties up Apple Glen parking lot
Odd package placed on truck was harmless GPS

A suspicious package forced Fort Wayne police to block off half of
the Wal-Mart parking lot at Apple Glen for several hours Tuesday afternoon.

Fort Wayne police spokesman Michael Joyner said a man was seen by a
Wal-Mart customer placing the package on the rear bumper of a Toyota
pickup truck about 11:15 a.m. The customer called police.

The package, which turned out to contain a global positioning system
tracking device, was inside a large plastic bag and was about the
size of a loaf of bread.

Police officers who first arrived at the Wal-Mart, 1710 Apple Glen in
southwest Fort Wayne, thought the situation was suspicious enough to
warrant calling out the department's explosive device disposal team,
Joyner said.

Using a bomb robot, bomb technicians removed the package from the
rear bumper of the truck and carried it to an area away from other cars.

Police were able to find the man who was seen placing the package on
the truck's bumper and questioned him about the contents while the
robot examined it. At one point, the crime scene tape fell down and
two cars drove within feet of the robot without realizing what was going on.

The man told police he is a private investigator and put the tracking
device on the truck because he was investigating the owner, Deputy
Chief Marty Bender said. Police were not releasing either person's
name Tuesday.

A bomb technician dressed in protective gear carried a portable X-ray
machine to the robot, and the package was examined. The X-ray images
confirmed the private investigator's story, Bender said.

At 1:37 p.m., more than two hours after police were called to the
scene, the bomb technician dressed in protective gear picked up the
package, opened it and found the tracking device.

Bender said the private investigator would not face charges.
