Gov't to warn local bodies about cordless phone eavesdropping
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' regional
information policy office has decided to warn local governments about
using analog cordless phones after it was learned that people could
listen in on calls with commercially available receivers.
The move came after a problem was found with analog cordless phones
used by the city of Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture.
Officials judged there was a possibility that personal information
could be leaked through people listening in on calls, and they plan
to warn local governments after the Golden Week series of holidays.
Following reports by the Mainichi, it emerged that such phones were
being used in every section of the Fukaya Municipal Government,
including the welfare section.
After realizing that personal information from citizens' family
registers and resident registration could be obtained by
eavesdropping on phone calls, the municipal government halted use of
the phones last Friday.
The city of Toda in Saitama Prefecture also stopped using the phones on Monday.
