Possible, but that would require extensive firmware modification. If
the eavesdropper was that sophisticated, the hardware would likely
not look so amateurish (bare PCB partially wrapped with black
electrical tape.) Such a "burst transmission" bug would be pretty
deadly and hard to detect. Doubtless they exist, but I've never
actually seen one.

Possible, but again it might require some firmware modification. My
guess is this modified phone was simply configured to auto-answer
without ringing so the eavesdropper could hear ambient speech. But
hidden behind a vehicle dashboard seems like a poor placement for a microphone.

Yes, but again that would require extensive firmware
modification--and the amateurish packaging of the device implies the
eavesdropper lacks such sophistication.
