Audio Recordings

FWIW, thanks to everyone who responded to my somewhat off-topic plea
regarding a DVR Security solution. I ended up going through
http://www.supercircuits.com/ . There was one issue regarding wiring,
but they responded immediately and 2nd day'ed me the right solution.
Plus, it was fun looking through their catalog.

That shared, i am now somewhat uninformed/ignorant of US laws regarding
audio recordings. (Yes, i could RTFM and google the laws, but i
consider this list a good resource.) I was told by several individuals
that it is illegal to record audio in a public place, ie a retail store.
I was also told that in order to legally record audio, a signature
approving the recording was necessary, before any recordings take place.

This now has me quite concerned, as several of my clients are recording
video, audio, and one guy i talked with said he was recording onto a PC
every time his IR detectors get a hit (for traffic flow he says).
Should anything ever require they provide their recordings to
police/courts, it would be a shame to let the perps walk on a
technicality such as the audio recordings are "illegal." Even worse, if
the perp then turns around and sues my clients for "illegally" recording
them sans any authorization!

I know that the security monitoring services are recording keypad
entries, video/door/window/etc hits, motion hits, et cetera, and to my
knowledge they are within their rights to do this. After i click send i
will call and ask if the monitoring services are recording audio. (Most
of the window breaks use audio input to determine if glass is being
broken, is this any different?)

So, knowledgeable TSCM list, what say ye?
