  • Random noise picture

Random noise, no signal quieting at all.

    SOT picture

This SOT overshoots low, corrects, overshoots high & then settles down on frequency in .02 seconds. 200/10,000

    SOT finger print picture

This is a judgement call. Position with the 'last' noise byte at the left edge of the grid.

    EOT finger print picture

This is a judgement call. Position with the 'first' noise byte at the right edge of the grid. The noise burst occurs as the PTT is released followed by shut-down.

    EOT picture

This EOT starts with a noise burst (PTT switch) followed by a delay ending in the shutdown transition to noise.

    carrier picture

This carrier is stable without modulation.

    sine wave picture

To determine a sine wave frequency, note the number of bytes peak to peak. Divide 10,000 by this number. Here it is 100 bytes. 10,000/100=100Hz

    Changing Variables by press F2

    SAMPLE SIZE
This is the size of sample used by find SOT (F3) and EOT (F4). Increasing the number will help the program find some noisier signals.
    LOW VALUE
This is the value used to stop the search. The lower the value the lower the audio frequency. Noise has higher frequencies.
    COMPARE
This value is used by the G function. The higher the number the more selective it is.
    FILTER
The higher the number the more filtering that is used.
    SQUELCH
Auto-record (R) variable. The higher the number, the lower the trigger frequency. Set to 99 for hardware only recording. Interface receiver COR through the joystick port.
    To exit F2
CR will ask if you want to save changes. Y = permanent change, ESC = exit no changes, any other key = change this session only.

The top line gives the Version number & filename of the file being modified. CR moves to the next field to edit. Gridcolor, TopLine, & BottomLine are color choices for the screens. Change with the up & down arrow keys. See colors below.

    Bottom_FILE
Bottom line File to be loaded on startup. Include the extension. These may be left blank, the program works normally.
    Rec_name
Name of the external recording program for your sound card, If needed. Leave blank to use the internal software.
    NAME
Toggle U/D to number position in your parameter list for your recording data file. NAME is a dummy for X_FILE.EXT. If your recording program is called PLAY_REC.EXE, PARM is 1, and X_FILE.EXT = FOX.RAW then
    Rec Shell
    will become PLAY_REC FOX.RAW automatically.

Finding Start & End of Transmission

    F3
This will find the next transition from noise to Start of Transmission (SOT).
    F4
This will find the previous transition from noise to End of Transmission (EOT). These functions must be started from inside an area of noise. F3 searches forward to the transition from noise to signal and F4 searches backwards to the transition from noise to signal.
    Tab
Moves through a file between recorded transmissions using the log file. (See recording files.) Starting at the beginning of the file, Tab places you between the 1st & 2nd,then 2nd & 3rd etc. transmissions. Therefore, from the beginning of the file, press F3 to find the first SOT. Hit Tab then F4 to find the 1st EOT or F3 to find the 2nd SOT. Shift-Tab Performs the reverse function. If you are located between the 3rd & 4th transmissions, Shift-Tab will place you between the 2nd & 3rd. This only works if there is a log file and you have been tabbing through the file. The #, Time, & Date of transmission are displayed in the lower left lower corner of the Main screen.
    Ctl-Tab Lists the Log file.
The first line is the filename. Column headings are Transmission number, Position in the file, Time of transmission, Date, Name (ID field for future use), and length of transmission in seconds. These keys are active:PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, arrows UP,DOWN,LEFT, & RIGHT. Highlight the selection you want, then press ENTER to go to it.

    Loading New files

    F5

    F6

Examples: *. , KB*.? , *.G* If nothing fits your search parameters, the program will say BAD FILE. If this happens, just type in a new name or ESC to quit. If the search finds more than one name, a pick list of files will appear. In this mode these keys are active:PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, the arrows UP,DOWN,LEFT,RIGHT, & DELETE. Highlight the file you want, then press ENTER to load it. If you press DELETE, the highlighted file and any associated .log file will be deleted. There is no warning.

    F8
Enter a new address for the lower file. Enter the number in bytes of the position in the file that you would like to jump to. There are 10,000 bytes/second so Bytes=10000*seconds.
    POS1: & POS2
on the top lines of the Main screen give the present position in the files.

ESC always ends the function without action. If you know the addresses, you may enter them in response to the prompts.
    F11
Save two blocks of the lower file. As above, there will be a number for the beginning of the first block. T will mark the end of the second block. You will need to supply the two middle numbers (end of the first block and start of the 2nd block). Accept the 4th number, supply a filename when prompted and accept it to save the file.
    Alt-S
Will return you to the last address stored in S.
    Alt-T
Will return you to the last address stored in T.

    Recording & Playing Files

    R
Press this key to begin automatic recording of two files. The first file will be titled 'x_file'.ext, as you specified in xsetup. Each time you press R the next available filename will be used. Also, each file has a 9 Mb limit (about 15 minutes of recording). This is automatic. The files will be closed, incremented, and reopened without loss of any transmissions.
    Example:
    First file, File.ext and File.LOG Second file File000.ext and File000.LOG 3rd file File001.ext and File001.LOG Etc, Etc......

Note: For these reasons, it is important that you limit the 'X_File' variable to 5 letters &/or numbers.

    ESC
While recording will stop recording and return to main screen.
    B
While recording will blank the file and start over.
    N
While recording will close, increment, and reopen the files.
    P
Press this key to play back File2. Playback starts at the position of the left edge of the screen. Any key (except ) stops the playback without changing the position in the file. Using stops & also moves the file position to where you stopped the playback.

    Auto Search files

    G
Line up the SOT you want compared on the bottom line. Xmit_id searches through all of the files in your data directory with NO extension or an extension starting with G(xx). It creates a list of all the files found with a value equal to or greater than the compare value set in F2. All files are given a value based on a comparison of each file to the file on the bottom line. If you find you are getting too many files in this list, press F2 and increase the entry for COMPARE. This list can be viewed later by pressing Alt F5. CR will view the first file on the top line. Alt + will view the next file in the list until you reach the last file. Alt - will view the previous file in the list. Use the F11 function to be compatible when registered.

    History files

    I
Creates/Opens an information file for the bottom file with the extension HST. The program gives the latest updated file date, file time, file size, and filename. You have ten lines to record whatever information you wish such as radio type, signal strength, frequency, or date/time etc.

    Printing Files

If you have DOS 5.0 or later you can make printouts of the screens produced by this program. The screen that I recommend you use Print Screen on is W. Print screen will work throughout the program. However, before you can print graphics screens, you must install the DOS GRAPHICS driver. The syntax used is:

    GRAPHICS [printer] [[d:][path]filename] [/R] [/B] [/LCD] [PB:id]

printer : Identifies the type of printer attached to your system. Select from the list in the next screen.filename: The name of the data file that contains printer information./R : reverses white and black in the printed image./B : prints the background in color on color printers./LCD : adjusts the aspect ratio of the printed image to match the LCD screen on the IBM PC Convertible/PB:id : id parameter can be set to either STD or LCD. Specifying /PB:LCD is the same as using the /LCD switch.
