I gotta a bad problem where I work. I suspect a f'd up HD but not sure. It's a CNC machine from Germany running Unix. So....

Is there a Unix utility that can check the intergrity of a hard drive - like, doing variously patterned write/read/restores - and reports on bad areas? Maybe even maps em out as bad, etc? Without reformatting.....

you mean like fsck? Anything more in-depth really depends on the platform [and the partition type, e.g. NFS/ext2/reiser/hpfs].
