New Jersey has always had an extremely virulent nest of Hasidics, and they make vengeance a fact of live. In this instance a Detective Charles Smith was assigned to investigate a ticket fixing scheme by a Jewish state attorney, and a group of local Hasidics.

Four years after the investigation, Smith same up for appointment, and was blocked by the Hasidics. It not only represents vengeance, but also a warning to others.

Second Candidate Picked

Despite making high score on the civil service Chief’s test, Captain Charles Smith was not chosen as Lakewood NJ’s new police chief. Instead, the job went to Capt. Robert Lawson.

State Senator Meets With Chief When asked about the decision, Smith said that it was made very clear to him in a meeting last week with the Jewish State Senator Robert Singer, and Rabbi Yisroel Schenkolewski, that he would not be chosen for the position.

Rabbi Officiates Over Dismissal

Rabbi Yisroel Schenkolewski sat in on the meeting, and Capt Smith was reminded of his role as lead investigator in the internal probe of ticket-fixing in 2005.

The controversy resulted in an investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

State Attorney Investigated

The investigation focused heavily on having traffic tickets dismissed that had been issued to prominent Lakewood hasidic Jews. After the investigation came to light, tickets that had been previously dismissed to jews, were re-written and issued. While no charges were ever filed, Former Lakewood Prosecutor Robert Rothstein was investigated by the Ocean County prosecutors office

The civil service position of chief would not report directly to the committee, and in addition termination from the position could not be instituted without good cause
