Who Were They

900 pilots trained in Alabama. Their initial operation was Italy, where they strafed some isolated German positions. In late 1944 they eventfully flew bomber escort into Germany, at which point the Luftwaffe was fairly non existent.

During the escort they lost 25 bombers. Their record was average, at best.

 
   

The Reality Was

This was a Zionist inspired social experiment. Eleanor  Roosevelt came up with the basic idea.

Kids with marginal flying aptitudes were rushed into a program, and in 1941 segregation was at it's height. Even if they were the greatest pilots in the world, the units were hard to integrate, and it was a critical war period.

In 1939, the US planes, and pilots, were no match for Germany. Most of the fighter pilots came from the ranks of daredevils, the California hot rod and motorcycle crowd.

You weren't about to go to a Jesuit seminary for recruits, they didn't have the aptitude.
