Vodafone 'phone-bugging' fine

The Greek unit of mobile operator Vodafone has been fined ?76 million
over a phone-tapping scandal.

It was revealed in February that more than 100 people, including the
Greek prime minister and senior ministers, had their mobile phones
tapped for nearly a year around the time of the Athens 2004 Olympics.

Vodafone said the fine by Greece's privacy watchdog was unjustified
and it would appeal against the decision.

Greece's Independent Information Security Authority said they imposed
the fine for the "number of infringements attributed to the company,"
but gave no further reasons.

The authority also decided to question Ericsson Hellas, the Greek
faction of the Sweden-based telecoms provider, because its equipment
was also used in the phone-bugging scandal.

Vodafone Greece said in a statement: "Vodafone completely rejects the
regulator's decision and considers the fine illegal, unfair and baseless."

The phone networks' London-based company said: "Vodafone's Greek
management team has fully co-operated with the inquiry and believes
the decision to fine the company is completely unjustified.

"Vodafone supports the decision of its Greek management team to
reject the authority's conclusions and to appeal against the
decision," it added.

Vodafone Greece informed the government of its suspicions when it
found there had been unauthorised use of its equipment.

But it was almost a year later before the case was made public,
prompting questions in the media about foreign intelligence services
that could have been involved with the tapping.
