Dan has noted that he does not have a car made after 1993. Yesterday I
saw a small piece in one of the Canadian newspapers reporting that it
was being advocated that the federal government provide a financial
incentive to help people replace cars older than 2004(?). The reason
given was that older cars are not environmentally friendly and
contribute to global warming. With that type of reasoning, can it be
long before governments will refuse to renew the annual registration
of older vehicles. Even if one obtains a "classic car" registration,
it is not a complete cure because those registered in that class
cannot be driven on a daily basis. I belive that in some countries
cars older than three years cannot be registered. I remember reading
one article years ago which stated that Japan used its domestic market
to subsidized its car exports by banning cars older than three years
regardless of mechanical condition. That assured the manufacturers of
a strong market at home regardless of financial conditions in the rest
of the world. Supposedly many of these older vehicles were then
purchased by brokers and shipped to the old Soviet Union and the
Middle East.

It appears that in today's world, a government can infringe on any
liberty by deeming it a privilege, not a right, and curtialing it on
the ground of either global warming or terrorism.

Though this will seem extreme, I have already
decided that I will buy no car made after 1993.
This has a cost, but with black boxes alone I
just won't do it. This strategy, however, won't
work for long or for many, nor will many care
or for long. Freedom isn't free.

This list, however, may be (could be) the place
to catalog how to disable each and every one of
these technologies. If it does that, the public
service so rendered could be (would be) solid.
I can only hope.
