Renderman
picked me up from the airport and I got to meet the two lovely ladies
who accompanied him to DefCon. Corinne and Lorna were impressed with
the room.

Eventhough
Renderman and the ladies had a place in town, they still spent a lot
of time at the Alexis where I offered my room as a storage locker.
|
There
was no lack of space in my pad. I liked having room to stretch out,
and apparently Lorna did, too.

We
had to drive to one of the Las
Vegas Radio Shack Stores to get a few things. As we left the parking
lot, i spotted this totally open wiring panel.

At
Radio Shack I found another security hole. :-)

We
needed to pick up a universal remote control. How else could we fuck
with the TV?

A

On
Friday morning, Jennifer Grannick
gave a wonderful talk regarding the USAPA.
|
Jennifer
was kind enough to even sign a copy of an
article she had written regarding intellectual property.
|
Back
in the room in between Friday's talks I played
a little more with my TV set using the universal
remote we bought at Radio Shack.

Ah,
now there was the administrative menu that one can't usually see.
|
With
a few presses of the buttons, I was easily able to modify channel permission
lists. Suddenly my in-room programming got a lot more extensive.

We
also discovered that it was fun to tinker with the TV set's "channel
label" feature.

This
was knowledge that I couldn't just keep to myself. :-)
|
As
is typical at DefCon each year, someone threw detergent into the fountain.
|
The
Capture the Flag competition on the Challenge LAN was amazing this year.
The ghettohackers did a great
job - they even had a dedicated channel just for CTF scores and news.

Just
as i had set the CTF channel's label to "0wn3d"
the Orange Team (who ultimately won the competition) went from a positive
score to a negative one.

In
another beautiful coincidence, we tuned to the DefCon Movie Channel
just as "Run, Lola,
Run" was started. We captured the FBI warning on-screen with
my custom channel label... "FUCKMPAA"
|
As
we all gathered in the main tent for the first round of Hacker Jeopardy,
the DefCon 10 Slogan contest winners were announced.

This
is the first evening of Hacker Jeopardy being set up. This year the
DefCon team did what many thought was the right thing and simply hired
two call girls hang out on stage, serve beer to contestants, and remove
their clothes.
|
I
have to say, this year's Vanna Vinyl really got into playing
the part.
|
When
she wasn't hanging over contestants she was whipping them. When she
wasn't parading around in skimpy clothes she was taking them off.

The
Drunken Whores came back
again this year. Just to be on the safe side, the DefCon goons decided
to keep a trash can near Humperdink for his convenience.

At
some point in the evening i was owned by the DOC. Much of the day was
a complete blur of lectures, running around, games, and other activities.
I'm pretty sure V1RU5 and his wife tagged me, but don't quote me on
that.

The
Schmoo Group gave a pretty cool
talk on Wireless Networking, Wardriving, and other aspects of 802.11b
security.

Joe
Burton, the lawyer for Dimitry Sklyarov, gave a rather uninteresting
summary of the Elcomsoft case.

Locksmith and security device expert Michael Glasser (a.ka. Laz) gave a great talk on the physical side of security, which was a very cool change of pace as many of the DefCon talks focus on the technical aspects of security. I do not know who this girl was on stage but she sure was cute. During his talk Laz commented of his love for beer and his appreciation for people who buy him drinks. Not being one to ever deny someone alcohol, i sprinted to one of the Alexis bars and brought a beer up to him. After the audience's applause over that move died down, he thanked me and while i was still standing we talked briefly about his panel with Barry at H2K2. I mentioned how it was a wonderful talk and that after seeing it I had bought my own lockpick set and practice kit with a little social engineering of an online dealer. Perhaps it was out of admiration for my enthusiasm, or perhaps it was a desire to put my in my place after fooling a dealer into shipping me a lot of equipment... in any case, Laz invited me up on stage to pick some of the locks that he had brought. I may not be as fast as Barry Wels, but sure enough I did get one open... the audience was very pleased. :-) |

A
few good shots of the Alexis Park grounds with the convention in full
swing. There staff there is very cool. How many hotels do you know
of that don't mind a slew of hackers running amok and hanging out on
the roof?

The
grounds there are beautiful. And look, this year almost no one kicked
over the little lights.
